"inventing" the #vBIB began when the 2020 German librarians conference was cancelled due to the corona pandemic. especially colleagues in the twitter community wished for an alternative. so BIB & TIB teamed up and organized a virtual conference within 6 weeks. #LIBER2023

from the organizational point of view there are questions as well, like resources and priorities, because it's not just a new service, but an organizational change with different interests involved. #LIBER2023 #userservices #informationdesks

now the question is: how can they built a hybrid environment, transfering the quality from one form to the other and vice versa, to enrich both? aspects are e.g. the digital "undisturbness" and the physical "approachability". #LIBER2023 #usersivces

some findings: at the physical and digital desk users ask different types of questions, the choice of physical/digital desk seems to depends on personal preference and convenience. #LIBER2023 #userservices

"what is a digital library on zoom?" was the question the colleagues asked themselves after setting up a first online information desk at the beginning of the corona pandemic. so they started using different methods to find out. #LIBER2023 #userservices

Chris emphasizes importance of having a strong framework to guide negotiations with publishers. MIT uses the MIT Framework for Publisher Contracts https://libraries.mit.edu/scholarly/publishing/framework/.

"Elsevier was unable or unwilling to produce a contract that aligns with our principles ... We are now paying per article ... at a cost that is approximately 10% of our old contract."

but: collections are not self evident, so you have to invest in instruction & availabilty, search and explore strategies differ from researchers, beware of virtual signalling, and work on your expectation management! #library #collections #access #interaction #LIBER2023

@martijnkleppe the #library did 3 experiments about how different types of "creative" users (KB artists in residence, arts and industrial design students) interact with the #collections. the results were very interesting -- and beautiful! see the published slides later. 😇 #LIBER2023
