The 2026 local elections were Labour’s first big test under Keir Starmer, and the verdict was brutal. Reform, Greens and Lib Dems gained ground at the cost of Labour and Tories. Today’s HT Number Theory looks at what this means for politics in the UK.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2026/may/07/local-elections-2026-may-full-results-england-scotland-wales#England-banner. STILL not the full #Council #results in #England, even on Sunday - but now 135 out of 136. Changes in numbers of #Councillors: #Labour lost 1,193; #ReformUK gained 1,349; #Tories lost 428; #Greens gained 376; #LibDems gained 143; #Others lost 243. Changes in #Council #control: Labour lost 36; Tories lost 8; #Reform gained 14; @thegreenparty gained 5; LibDems gained 3; No Overall Control (NOC)/Others gained 22.

So #Lambeth seems poised to be one of the last councils in #London to declare the winner of the #localelections, with high stakes and apparently very upset #Labour councillors asking for recounts where there are small margins. We are now 1 seat away from Labour losing its historical majority.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/may/08/liberal-democrats-lib-dems-ed-davey-elections. The #LibDems love to position themselves as "centrist" & "moderate" - ignoring the fact that the #centre isn't a fixed point, but moves, & has been moving, further & further to the #right, with the rest of the #political #spectrum, for a very long time now. It may be reasonable to talk about counteracting the #threat from #ReformUK; but to lump them & @thegreenparty together is (a) insulting the #Greens; & (b) not very sensible #politics, given the LDs may need to go

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2026/may/07/local-elections-2026-may-full-results-england-scotland-wales#England-banner. 129 out of 136 #Council #results declared (overall #change in seats): #Labour has lost 1,051 #Councillors; #ReformUK has gained 1,276; the #Tories have lost 427; @thegreenparty have gained 306; the #LibDems have gained 142; & "Others" have lost 242. Overall change in council #control: Labour have lost 32; the Tories, 8; No Overall Control (NOC), 20; but #Reform have gained 13; the #Greens, 4; & the #LibDems, 3.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2026/may/07/local-elections-2026-may-full-results-england-scotland-wales#Wales-banner. The #Welsh #Senedd #results: Plaid Cymru, 43; #ReformUK, 34; #Labour, 9; #Conservatives, 7; #Greens, 2; #LibDems, 1. The #election was by means of a new system, that of a closed Party list system in 16 multi-member constituencies, each returning 6 #members of the Senedd, 96 in total. 49 are required for a majority. The result is an absolute disaster for Labour, & - once again - sees #Reform profiting at the expense of the #Tories.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2026/may/07/local-elections-2026-may-full-results-england-scotland-wales#Scotland-banner. Finally, the full #results - although I have to wait until Saturday morning for them. In #Scotland, #SNP down 2 on 58; @ScottishGreens up 7 on 15; #Labour down 3 on 17; #ReformUK up 16 on 17; #Tories down 16 on 12; #LibDems up 5 on 10. It is noteworthy that all the #Scottish #Reform #gains were at #Conservative expense. There are 129 seats in the Scottish #Parliament in total, which is elected using the #AMS system. 65 seats are needed for a majority.

"Looking at the wider trends, the polling expert Prof Sir John Curtice says "frankly none of the political parties have the support of a substantial section of the public", and are all minorities."

@nusher @Geri Explain what you mean about the LibDems? I think it's more likely that you would find support for #ScottishIndependence among #ScottishLabour than among the #LibDems.

Early #Lambeth results: Trend accentuating, #Labour total collapse and #GreenParty lead. #LibDems picking up crumbs, unclear for now whether Labour will end up last or not, that would be absolutely seismic for a council that has been Labour for 52 years out of 60 (i.e. since 1965)!
A proof if needed that NOT LISTENING to constituents eventually has a price!

A grim success for #Starmer's .smear.
As of 9.20am, the English local election results look grim. Huge gains for '#ReformUK, small gains for Greens and #LibDems. Losses for #Conservatives, huge losses for #Labour.
But so far, #Starmer's blitzkreig of antisemitism smears on the Greens #GPEW has paid off for him. As Labour intended, Labour's losses have gone to the fash rather than the left.
London will be different. But the results so far are Starmer's gift to the right.

In the 2010 General Election, this #Levenshulme #Manchester estate agent shop was the election office for #LibDems candidate Qassim Afzal.
Now it seems to be the election office for #WorkersPartyGB, the ego trip party of all round horrible person George Galloway. Weird how things change over time.

More cooperation, less factionalism is what the Left needs to be working towards. And yes that means #Greens , #Labour and #LibDems along with other progressive parties finding ways to advance equality, diversity and genuine democracy.
I’ve attended a few #Compass events online and it’s genuinely a great thing to witness. More of this please!
