I dunno, fast-charging an EV-sized battery at 1 MW has enormous potential [1] for entertainment value, for dangerous values of "entertainment". For an 800-volt architecture, that's 1250 amps. Anything where "kiloamp" can usefully be used as a unit is Definitely Up There in terms of small mistakes making big consequences.

I replaced the battery pack in a Mac laptop a few days ago. The replacement I ordered came with a tiny little booklet labelled "Instructions", but it consisted of nothing but warnings.
One of them literally says "Do not hammer a nail through the battery."

I've been designing PCBs for a while, but this is my first time ever designing one with any sort of battery charging or antenna connection. People recommending you manually use a CC/CV power supply are not helping you 😉
Good chargers will let you set what *type* of battery it is, and will correctly charge all major types. I've got a four-cell (four independent charging circuits) that will happily charge NiCad, Nickel Metal Hydride, LiFePO4, Lithium-ion polymer, and a few others. It mostly autodetects the correct type.
They're not stupidly expensive. The model I have is currently $37 Canadian from Amazon:

Can anyone please give me advice on finding a reputable seller of Li-ion batteries in the UK?
I want to replace the battery in a solar floodlight. It uses 4 ICR18650 cells at 7.4Vdc, and I'd rather buy a pre-balanced battery pack because I haven't worked with Li-ion before.

Не, я понимаю, что ёмкость больше. Я даже понимаю, что кому-то зарядка батареек через type-C может казаться удобной.
Но в гитару такие батарейки ставить банально нельзя - их преобразователи шумят.

Thought I'd try some of these. If you're not familiar, they're a Li-Ion battery dressed up as AA with an internal PCB that regulates charging and bucks them to 1.5V. Good for devices that aren't happy with the 1.2V of a NiMH AA rechargeable.
The capacity is bullshit, as usual when you buy from China, real one is maybe half that, but that would've been ok.
Not okay: Overheating to the point where the battery compartment is deformed and the device fried*. At least they didn't catch fire. 👎
Can't recommend at all.
* Probably. Can't test it with other batteries because they no longer fit in the deformed housing.

My #BMS #PCBs arrived from @aislerhq and they look nice. I designed it because I couldn't find 3S BMS for #LiFePO4 cells and didn't like the voltage thresholds of the cheap #LiIon ones.
It uses the #BQ77915 chip from #TexasInstruments. Size is 63x50mm.
While fetching all components according to the BOM, I noticed the #diode had the #footprint SOT-323 assigned. I only have SOT-23 ones :blobcatgoogly:
I'm glad that I can still make it fit, and the third leg isn't used at all (it's a single diode).
Can't wait to find some time to finish soldering a few and try them out.
It supports 3S up to 5S, and I added #silkscreen part to mark how it's configured.
The back has detailed instructions, so I don't forget them. -

During the test, the screen is fixed with some tape.Thanks for asking regarding the battery connector 😄 I was very careful and used kapton tape to isolate all contacts I wasn't working on. I think that working on the old (swollen) battery is less critical than working on the the new battery. I wasn't able to measure a voltage on the old battery. Both batteries are equipped with a protection circuit.

#AliExpress / cheap #Chinese goods / #questionable sellers, part 37:
1. Order #rechargeable 3-speed folding desk #fan.
2. Receive different version of same fan - no #electronics, no #battery, just a USB lead, it runs at one speed when plugged in, unplug it to turn off.
3. File "item not as described" ticket with photos clearly showing it's the wrong item.
4. AliExpress rejects ticket, the human who spent 0.3s reviewing it didn't read it and just clicked "#reject".
5. Edit #photos, adding big red "NO BATTERY HERE -->" and "NO ELECTRONICS HERE -->" etc and resubmit ticket.
6. AliExpress accepts claim this time. Get refund.
7. Place order for same rechargeable fan from different #seller.
8. Receive fan. #Charge. Give to partner."It turns off after a few seconds", she says.
Take it apart. Examine the circuit board, #probe it various ways, all looks good. #Measure #voltages. Manually #power the fan and see it draws half an #amp. See the suspiciously undersized lithium-ion #cell and think "they didn't just #cheap out so much that the thing doesn't work, did they?"...
Yup. The plastic casing has a slot & tabs arrangement inside sized for an 18650 cell, but they've got a much smaller cell in there with some padding to keep it in place. It's a 14500.
When the fan's on, the load is too much for the cell. The voltage drops enough that the little 3-speed management #chip thinks the cell is flat, and it turns off.
Put in a good 18650, runs like a charm.
Sheesh.

Does anyone have a protective box for their battery charging needs? What kind?
My complications are:
- Long ebike battery that needs to be charged from the end
- Battery charge state needs to be observable (it's a blinking LED on the battery)
- Preferably easy to chuck out the door/window in case of shit hitting the fanI'm considering getting some kind of metal box, padding it with fireproof material, and adding a simple camera/monitor for observing the insides.

Die 1,5V #LiIon-Zellen (Größe AA, integrierter Spannungswandler) haben sich in den in den Heizkörper-Thermostaten (#DANFOSS Eco) richtig bewährt.
Seitdem ich die Temperaturen via #BLE auslese, sind 1,2V #NiMH leider endgültig keine praktikable Option mehr.
Ich habe dann herumgesucht und die relativ neuen 4150 mWh Zellen von #XTAR als mögliche Lösung ausprobiert.
