  6. Tim Curry (One For the Misfits) 👑

Okay, we’ve been planning our Rocky Horror Picture Show film review for a while now and had it penned in for October. Then came the sad news yesterday of Tim Currys’ passing.

He was one for us misfits of the world, he knew it, and that’s why he needs celebrating. From the memorable stage and film performances, through to his singing career, this guy managed to make being cool and unusual a career. And we’ve got to celebrate that, dammit!

    All Hail, Tim Curry

Our first experience of Mr. Curry was from Home Alone 2 (1992) where he played an uptight hotel concierge. Then there was the ridiculous, silly, great fun Congo (1995). We saw it as kids 30 years ago and took it very seriously, then as adults we realised the intention of the film and enjoyed it for what it really is.

It was another one of Michael Crichton’s book adaptations, but this was no Jurassic Park.

Curry played diamond-obsessed philanthropist Herkermer Homolka and hammed it up to the nines. He seemed to be the only actor in the film who realised it was a B movie type daft-o-thon and he’s the one who came out of it shining.

He’s in a scene with the line STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE! A brilliant one for the ages.

But he’s most famous for his roles in It (1990) as Pennywise the clown, an adaption of Stephen King’s horror novel.

And, of course, there’s his stage show run in the Rocky Horror Show in the early 1970s. Once it was adapted to the 1975 film it turned him into an overnight star.

This was the mid-1970s, a very homophobic, conservative time. From Curry, this performance was just total confidence, no concerns about anything, and very much in the Freddie Mercury maximum flamboyance run of things. Queen was around at the time, of course, Bohemian Rhapsody launched the same year as this film.

It won’t be much of a surprise, really, but Mercury loved the stage play (which he saw many times) and the film.

At first, Rocky Horror Picture Show wasn’t a hit at all and met with snotty reviews from critics. It didn’t really do anything until the American subculture audience latched onto it with the legendary midnight movie marathons in the US.

The gay community of the time (now LGTBQ) was floored by it and suddenly realised what it meant. Written by Richard O’Brien and one of the few films of the time to celebrate misfits and diverse sexuality. It became a sensation and people began turning up at cinemas dressed as various characters and, to this day, the film is still in circulation.

It’s the longest running film in history, having never left any cinema ever. There’s always one showing of it on the go! And we think that’s a glorious tribute to Tim Curry’s charisma in the film.

His co-star in Rocky Horror Picture Show, Susan Sarandon, gave him a lovely tribute.

Incredible achievements, really, for a post-WWII baby born in April 1946 in Cheshire. His mother was a school secretary and father a Royal Navy chaplain. A year after his birth, his family moved to Hong Kong, then back to England, where they constantly moved to new seaside towns.

Eventually, he went to Birmingham University to study English and Drama. The year was 1968!

He got his first role in the musical Hair (1968), which is where he met Richard O’Brien. That put him on the radar to play Dr. Frank-N-Further for the stage play of The Rocky Horror Show. The rest is history.

As an actor and singer, he was always happy to take tongue-in-cheek roles and not take himself too seriously. Later in his career he branched out into video games, way before that became the norm with actors.

There’s the famous absurd clip below from Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (2008) where he was just about able to compose himself.

Curry was a heavy smoker and suffered a major stroke in July 2012. This changed the course of his life and left him using a wheelchair, but from his various recent interviews he was as funny and witty as ever.

He’d been very active in the last few years giving many interviews, writing his autobiography Vagabond (it launched in 2025), and commemorating the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

It’s a sad time, but a hell of a life must be celebrated, too.

  8. Portrait of a Lady on Fire: A Very Considered Masterpiece 🔥

Wow, well this is a masterpiece. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu) was written and directed by Céline Sciamma and launched in autumn of 2019. In 2022, it was voted the 30th greatest film of all time in a Sight & Sound poll.

Rightly so, but it annoys us it took so long to finally watch it. Well worth the wait as its lead actors, Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel, are outstanding and this is a love story for the ages.

The Female Gaze in Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Set in the 18th century, we find the painter Marianne (Noémie Merlant) heading to an island off Brittany. She’s commissioned to paint a portrait of gentry woman Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), whose Countess mother (Valeria Golino) needs to marry off into a rich Italian nobleman’s life.

The portrait must be very good so it convinces the man to take Héloïse’s hand in marriage.

However, the problem is Héloïse has refused to pose for any portraits. She’s depressed her life is simply about being married off to some rich bloke. To get around the refusal, Marianne is hired to surreptitiously spend time with Héloïse, memorise her features, and do the painting.

In time, the pair bond and Héloïse even agrees to pose for the portrait.

She and Marianne begin to fall in love, with the big problem being it’s 18th century France and not socially acceptable. When Héloïse’s mother must briefly leave the island, they’re able to spend five days together. But all with the knowledge they’ll be parted from each other forever once the Countess returns.

Of which, much has been written elsewhere online about the female gaze. The two lead characters have agency, but are ultimately restrained by tedious social conventions (sadly, to devastating effect).

We’re not adding in any scenes to this review, but we’re going to going to highlight how stunning the film is thanks to cinematography by Claire Mathon.

Now, we’re sure some types watched the film in 2019 and found it “boring” or whatever as there aren’t car chases and explosions. But in terms of a slow burner tragic love story, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a modern classic.

Everything about it is perfect from start to finish, which is rare in any form of culture.

Alongside the brilliant performances and excellent script, the little details make it stand out. We didn’t notice until after the film, but there’s almost no music at all. There’s a segment from a single written for the production called La Jeune Fille en Feu, which is a capella. Plus, twice Summer from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is used in the film (the second time to devastating effect).

The frequent peace and quiet lends itself to the conclusion of the narrative. Thinking of other modern classics, Portrait of a Lady on Fire’s ending is as emotionally devastating as the finale to Charlotte Well’s Aftersun (2022). Wherever we go online to look at feedback from film fans, the discussion point is all about director Céline Sciamma’s ending.

It’s an incredible demonstration of Adèle Haenel’s acting abilities and is a closing scene for the ages. Sadly, Haenel retired from the film industry in 2023 as a protest against ingrained sexism and patriarchy. She now works in theatre.

And that does, abruptly, cut back to the core nature of what the film is about. How ingrained sexism in society prevents two people from leading the lives they want to lead.

Very possibly the best film of the 2010s, then, and one to watch in total concertation.

The Production of Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Off its €4.48 million budget the film made €8.48 million at the global box office. However, it was a big critical hit at Cannes Film Festival and was picked as one of three films by the French Ministry of Culture for entry to the 2020 Academy Awards.

However, it was Ladj Ly’s adaptation of Les Miserables that was ultimately submitted.

Of course, the Oscars isn’t about what is the best film in any given year, but if there was any justice Portrait of a Lady on Fire would’ve swept the board and won everything. The Women Film Critics Circle awarded it a bunch of gongs, though, and it won the Queer Palm award at Cannes.

Plus, our favourite film critic (Dr. Mark Kermode) had this to say.

The film was shot across October and November 2018 with everything wrapped up in 38 days. The commune of Saint-Pierre-Quiberon in Brittany was used for external shots, with a château in La Chapelle-Gauthier in Seine-et-Marne for the indoor shots.

Saint-Pierre-Quibero is classically French in every single way. Very peaceful looking and sleepy, in that quaint French way where it feels like no one actually lives there (or they’re just hiding from you).

Anyway, seven years after its release and the film is now considered an outright classic. Certainly, it’s one of the best films we’ve seen this century and we can highly recommend you indulge in its luxuries.

  29. A post came across my feed yesterday talking about how #fediverse has a problem with onboarding; Something along the lines of choosing 'infrastructure' should not be the first choice for a new user.

Seems more like a perfect introduction to the fediverse to me. 'Choose the #community you want to see on your live feed. these are going to be your neighbors until you find your friend group.' is what we need to be telling these folks.

I love my server, its regionally close, meaning news is often more appropriate for me, and its #lgtbq and #trans positive, which are first level concerns for me, despite being a #cis #white #male.
