  4. #IndigenousPeoples’ Day: #LGBTQ+ films, TV shows, and docs to watch

Bernardo Sim, Mon, October 13, 2025

"Hollywood has had a long history of excluding Indigenous peoples from mainstream media — often turning real stories and individuals into senseless caricatures that are more widely understood by the general public.

"Thankfully, several young #Indigenous writers, directors, actors, musicians, and performance artists have been actively fighting back in recent years to reclaim narratives, be accurately visible, and have ownership of their own stories.

"Though we’re still far from an ideal standard, reflecting on this painful history and looking forward to a more equitable future are great activities to honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Below, a list of films, TV shows, and documentaries that center and/or feature LGBTQ+ Indigenous identities."

  9. I discovered Disney's show, The Owl House, through my daughter, who adores it. While anime is typically my go-to, I watched a few episodes with her. The story centers around a teenage girl, Luz Noceda, who accidentally ends up in a demon world instead of a "Reality Check" summer camp. Luz, seen as quirky and distracted at school, gets a chance to become a witch, facing various dangers and making new friends. It's a Disney-style isekai tale, highlighting Luz's Latin American heritage through her use of Spanish phrases, which may be why my daughter feels so connected to the show.

A few weeks ago, I was browsing a lesbian women's Facebook group where someone asked for favorite sapphic couples, or "ships". The first one that came to mind was "Korrasami" from Avatar: The Legend of Korra, a favorite of my wife. Another suggestion was "Catradora" from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Each suggestion included images of the couples sharing intimate moments. Then, I saw a picture of two girls standing close together, holding hands, with affectionate expressions. I recognized them as Luz and Amity Blight and learned their ship name: Lumity.

Curious, I searched YouTube for "Lumity moments" and was quickly captivated by their story. Watching them evolve from rivals to friends to something more was utterly enchanting. I couldn't resist sharing my newfound obsession with my wife, who was delighted by my first foray into shipping, another sign of my gender psychological transition. We had a playful conversation about the nature of shipping and my past interests, which brought me a sense of gender euphoria.

During the particularly tough time I am going through, I decided to dive into The Owl House starting from season one. The episode "Enchanting Grom Fight" left me in tears of pure happiness. Luz's bravery and the deepening bond between her and Amity were exactly what I needed to see. Watching this series has brought immense joy and emotional catharsis, especially in the midst of recent challenges.

Today, watching the show with my daughter and wife, I was overjoyed to see Amity kiss Luz on the cheek and eventually ask her out. These moments, filled with genuine emotion, have helped me navigate through my own feelings. While my ADHD often leads to intense periods of hyperfocus, I hope this connection with Lumity is more than just a fleeting interest. For now, I'm cherishing every moment of this magical journey.

  10. California passes anti-book ban bill: 'The true freedom state' | While some states are banning books left and right, California is set to enact a law that would penalise schools that ban any book reflecting the state’s diversity, including those that explore LGBTQ+ identities and race.
