The Shape of His Loneliness: A Haunting Flash Fiction Tale
Standing on the other side of the room, Reg Colebrook could hardly take his eyes off her.
‘Walk towards me and kiss me,’ he said to himself, before bursting out laughing.
For the briefest of moments, the faces and figure of his wife flashing before him bought the laughing to a stop. She had the face of somebody who looked as if she was sucking a lemon, her lips painted in that awful shade of red he once found very inviting. Her figure, once an hourglass, was now less hourglass and more ‘all-you-can eat buffet.’ No words were needed. Her eyes told him the story of what and how she felt about him.
Concentrating on the figure of the beautiful woman in front of him again, the face of Reg’s wife faded away under protest. ‘I’ll get you back one of these days, Reg Colebrook,’ her voice echoed.
“Two minutes, Reg”, came another voice that shook Reg into reality again.
Reg took the final look at the figure of the woman in front of him and admired what he saw. That was an ‘all-you-can eat buffet he’d happily delve into. A smile ran across his face before he turned around and left.
The figure of the beautiful woman followed him, while the voice that had shook him announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome on stage Miss…Barb…Dywer.” A huge round of applause and cheers sent Reg into orbit. This was the community he had meant to always be a part of. He was finally home.
Behind him, the room that Reg had filled by himself for the last 45 minutes, although now empty, still held the shape of his loneliness in the mirror he’d been standing in front of. The silence was finally losing it’s grip even though it had learned his name and decided to stay.

Together, we two young men danced under the moonlit sky while rainbow butterflies fluttered around us.
This fiesta was more than just a celebration; it was a declaration of our love over prejudice.
Embraced by cheers and applause, we finally kissed, the world around us fading to insignificance.
Our love was a beacon at that moment, guiding others towards acceptance and a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow.

Amid the flags, my town celebrated love, welcoming the weather’s arrival, which marked the final breaths of summer. Hearts bloomed like the August flowers.
Couples, regardless of gender, held hands, their love as natural as the warm sun that had kissed their cheeks.
But, like people, the weather could be erratic.
A sudden storm darkened the sky, raining on the love. But as resilient as a rainbow after the rain, love persisted.
Together, we weather life’s disruptions, proving that love knows no bounds, no matter the storm. It always shines as brilliantly as the sun emerging from the clouds.

“I’m so glad you’re here. I was worried something was wrong,” came the reply.
We hugged. We’d been through so much together.
“There’s nothing wrong with me being gay, right, Gran?”
She shook her head.
“I love you, Gran.”

We hugged again before I went to my room.
I was finally ready to start living my life openly and honestly. And I knew I had my grandmother’s love and support to help me along the way.
Although I was tired, I was also happy. I knew that I was finally home.

Amid the chaos of the rising floodwaters, Anne and Fiona found themselves stranded on a rooftop.
They’d been strangers before, but now they clung to each other for survival.
As the water crept closer, they discussed their lives and dreams, finding unexpected commonalities. They shared stories of heartbreak and triumph. It wasn’t long before they silently fell in love with each other.
They spent the night on the rooftop, holding each other tightly as the water raged below.
When the rescue boats arrived, they stepped into a new world, hand in hand, ready to face whatever came their way.

As the Pride Parade approached, the city streets were awash with every rainbow colour. But for Tim, a young, closeted bisexual man, only one colour truly embodied the spirit of hope – Green. It was the colour of his first love’s eyes and the hope he carried for a world that accepted and celebrated all identities.
As he watched the march, he knew he was not alone. Many diversities watched the parade while waving rainbow flags. Together, they would fight for a future where every colour of love was accepted.
Hope always won over the hatred for being different.

I met Hans on the battlefield. Our eyes locked across the chaos of war as shots rang out. At that moment, nothing else existed.
Drawn to each other like moths to a flame, we became united by the realisation that life was too short to waste on hate.
But we parted on different sides as my commander shouted to fall back.
Many years later, when the world was at peace, I never thought we would reunite and our love would be as strong as that day in 1915.
For Hans and I, shots fired had led to love found.

I followed the lady’s shadow on her journey. She took me around the house and waited for me when I fell behind.
If rooms were dark, I’d flick on the light to see her. She talked to me on our journey and reassured me that everything would be okay.
When I heard the key in the front door, she had to leave, but another shadow took her place.
As I quickly took off my mother’s dress, pearl necklace and high-heeled shoes, my father’s voice called out.
“Are you ready, William? Time for you to hit the under-elevens football pitch.”

Kate couldn’t believe how swimmingly her date with Vera had gone.
They may have both been in their eighties, but sixty years ago, when they first started dating people of the same sex, life was more difficult. You could hold hands without drawing much attention, but a passionate kiss on the lips was a no-go area. Murdering someone was easier.
Looking at Vera’s lifeless body, Kate carefully removed the poisonous lipstick from her lips and took a swig of the antidote to be on the safe side.
Murdering someone was still as swimmingly as it was sixty years ago.

Although Fatima knew this remote, off-the-radar place had existed for many years, she’d never plucked up the courage to visit it.
But instead of the darkness, isolation and dread she’d heard existed inside; she found her true self when stepping through the door.
Throwing off the shackles of a life lived as a lie, she swapped it for one she knew she wanted. Gliding toward the lights, she danced while being watched by rainbow-coloured faces.
As happiness finally filled her life and laughter filled her lungs, she decided she would tell her husband she was gay in the morning.

Vikki floated on cloud nine for years while dating two men who had no idea the other existed.
As soon as she knew which one to propose and marry, she’d divorce her husband and end the relationship with the other man she was secretly seeing.
But Vikki couldn’t make up her mind.
Eventually, her bubble burst, and she was brought down from cloud nine with a bump when her husband made up her mind for her when she found him in bed with one of her lovers.
It wasn’t long before all four were floating on cloud nine again.

He couldn’t believe he’d slept for a day.
The world was still there when he drew back the curtains. He watched as people went about their business.
After making himself a coffee, he sat down and thought about what he’d done.
He’d just as well try again because nobody had missed him.
Picking up the empty pill bottle, he realised he’d need to get more sleeping tablets and another bottle of vodka.
In the pharmacy, he met David, working there for a day. He married him a year later.
He was so glad the pill bottle had been empty.

Red lights flashed before his eyes, yet he felt the need to enter the building. He had an idea of what he would find once inside, but the danger would still be lurking. He had to be careful and ensure nothing or nobody threatened his life.
The fact that he was over 25 miles away from home helped release some of his anxiety. As he pushed open the door, adrenalin pumped through his body before danger stared back at him.
“Dad! What? I can explain. Did you follow me? Or did you know this place is a gay bar?”

After witnessing the solstice, Richard asked, “What do we do now?”
“We carry on what we’re doing,” replied Adrian.
“But what if—“
“We’re young; we carry on who we are, not what others want us to be. Nothing and nobody can ever change us.”
“But my father, he’ll try. He’ll kill us. He’d never cope knowing I’m carrying on with another guy.”
“Carrying on? Another guy? Who do you love more, Richard?”
A long pause was interrupted when both young men turned and faced each other and spoke simultaneously.
“Let’s carry on being who we are. I love you.”

“What’s the matter? Why are you crying?” whispered Adrian to his husband.
“I can’t help it,” sobbed Richard. “This LGBT film festival brings us lots to smile about, and when you see what we’re viewing on the screen right now, I can’t help but think about the times when, as a young boy, I cried myself to sleep because I thought I was all alone in this world.”
Looking around the theatre, Adrian witnessed evidence of tears and popcorn. Looking up at the screen, he squeezed Richard’s hand tight and watched the story unfold in front of the world.

He loved everything about the house except the candy-coloured kitchen.
Moving through the rooms, Richard destroyed everything in his path, keeping the best until last. His fists did all the work like giant metal balls on the end of chains that swang and knocked down old buildings.
Upon reaching the candy-coloured kitchen, his rage and anger peaked. Moments later, silence surrounded the house until the sound of sobbing interrupted his discernment of achievement.
“What have you done?” sobbed his six-year-old sister.
“If Daddy won’t let me play with your dolls’ house, then nor can you,” a wide-eyed Richard yelled.

Time was running out.
It wouldn’t be long before he got found out.
Burying it, he quickly removed any signs of disturbance.
The heavy rain and thunder didn’t help.
With mud stuck to his hair, his clothes, and over his hands, even his fingernails would give the game away.
Although the mud had swallowed up the object, he couldn’t relax.
“Adrian!” exclaimed Richard. “I’m home.”
Just in time, thought Adrian, as he lay a fork next to a tea plate.
When Richard cut into a slice of chocolate mud cake with the fork and discovered the ring, he’d propose.

“I hope he doesn’t find us,”
“So do I,” whispered Richard. “We’re in big trouble if he does.”
“Why? What’ll he do?”
“God knows,” murmured Richard, “but it won’t be nice. Now, be quiet; I hear footsteps approaching.”
“Richard!” yelled Adrian as he entered the empty bedroom.
Creaking sounds from the wardrobe grabbed his attention.
“Oh no, I think he’s going to find us,” whispered Richard just before the two doors of the wardrobe opened. “Quickly, hide.”
“Richard! Found you. But who are you talking to?” challenged Adrian.
“Keep your eyes closed, and he won’t see us,” whispered Richard.

“Because it’s still too soon. Grief left empty-handed when you opened the door and let me in, but the answer to your future lays across the water.”
“But I can’t swim.”

“Nope. I got all the paperwork of authenticity.”
“I love it.”
“Get writing that first novel you keep telling us you have inside you.”
“Horror! It’ll be a horror story. It has to be horror, what with it being Stephen King’s chair.”

“Why do you ask?”
“No reason. I’m curious.”
Adrian watched Richard go into deep thought.
“Did it involve a big, black horse?”
“It did, yes!”
You were riding it through a snow-covered field during a blizzard one Christmas. You and that horse stood out so much,” laughed Richard.
Smiling to himself, Adrian closed his eyes and recalled their first meeting. On Brighton beach, he watched Richard riding a big, black horse on the carousel one summer.
The early stages of Alzheimer’s were causing another blizzard in the mind of his husband.

As I watched figures going through the open door, not even the pattering of rain on the roof of the car took away the fear I felt.
“What if…”
As my hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, anxiety began to snowball out of control.
“What if..?”
The thoughts of home and a warm bed were welcoming and safe.
“What if..?”
As I drove away, the LGBT community, who I feared, would have to wait another two years before joining them behind the open door that led to non-judgmental new friends, a new life and being who I really was.

For the last four weeks, George was in meltdown.
Not only had somebody given him two new black eyes, but a stranger had swapped his favourite yellow scarf for an orange one. George hated the colour orange; it didn’t suit him.
Last week, Judy, who he thought was his best friend, had given him a floppy, wide-brimmed summer hat. What on earth was she thinking? What next? Sunglasses?
Now, this week, he was in total meltdown and having a nightmare time of it all. The beginning of spring was not the best time of the year for a snowman.

Nodding his head, Adrian studied the photo again. “The older man is hot. Who is he?”
“My great-grandfather. Mum said my grandmother took the photo in Poland in 1939.”
“Why does he have a star and what looks like a triangle on his shirt?”
If that photo were in colour, you’d see a pink triangle. But the family have never wanted to talk about it.”

Having come from wherever it had departed, the cat’s eyes peered at the three houses.
The first was too dark, dull and lifeless. Nobody lived there.
The second was charming, full of life; every window opened with a mixture of human voices and music emerging — no chance of any peace there.
A rainbow flag fluttered from the third and, although familiar, seeped grief.
A tragic-looking middle-aged man named Adrian answered Rainbow’s scratching at the front door.
“Richard? Is that you? You always told me you’d come back as a cat.”
Tears of comfort allowed grief to leave empty-handed.

On the longest day of the year, his most prolonged problem was about to end.
Looking over the edge of the cliff, Adrian wondered if he could fly. After all, he was a little underweight, and although daylight had broken, nobody but his best friend would witness him flying.
At 04:31, his problem died when he took the final jump and placed his lips on the mouth of Richard.
As both young men enjoyed the moment, the butterflies in their stomachs did the flying.
The summer solstice of 2021 was the day they both came out to the world.

Panting, Rusty admired the world around him. Doing this got him excited. A hard pull on his leash forced him to stop fantasising.
“Good boy, Rusty. You deserve a treat for being so good today,” said his owner.
‘A treat,’ thought Rusty. ‘I hope that means doing this again today.‘
Twenty minutes later, an exhausted Rusty stood up and asked his owner if they could try out what they’d been doing with the leash down at the new leather bar.
As his boyfriend’s eyes lit up, Rusty knew the thought of other leashed men on parade was a winner.

Despite the bruises, Andrew admired himself in the mirror. A princess looked back at him.
“Don’t forget your shoes.”
The red high heeled shoes, although too big, complemented his mother’s burgundy dress he had on.
“You’re pretty,” remarked the princess.
The faint noise of his father’s car’s unexpected arrival caused panic in Andrew and the princess.
“Hide behind me,” yelled the princess, “before he beats you again.”
Crouching behind the mirror, he tried making himself invisible.
As the smell of alcohol and the unbuckling of his father’s belt reached him, tears made their escape down the young boy’s face.

Living his life in the closet, Alan never wanted his father finding out he was gay.
He loathed going to watch football every Saturday afternoon with his father. But he never showed how disappointed he was with the season ticket his father gifted him every Christmas.
But on the Saturday after his father’s death, Alan carried on with the tradition.
“Hello. I’m Tim,” came a voice from behind. “Where’s your father today?”
Alan never dreamt that a season ticket would be the key to meeting the love of his life and no longer living his life as a lie.
