Ideocracy is an Idea Misspelled
Fans of the band Bury Me Standing will know from whence I thieved the title of today's post. According to Gralie Bohe's novel, The Boy in the Yellow Leatherette Portmanteau, Dante Jivanadalli originally wanted to call their first album of the new century Ideocracy is an Idea Mispelled, but Josue Baluende was emphatically against it. Teri Ainsworth and Ross Kerrinza also disliked it, but Jivanadalli remained stubborn. It took a long time for the band to persuade Jivanadalli out of his fervor, but when he did finally agree to abandon his argument, the band still did not have a title. The band considered releasing the album without a title but they had done that on their fifth album, and they did not want to do it again. They took a week away from each other, for everyone in the band to come up with a list of titles. They met up for "beer, beans, biscuits and bitchin" (Ainsworth's phrase for the process the band used to handle their interior conflicts) at Baluende's house in Whittlespear Beach. These get-togethers were informal and happenstance, but they had one strict rule: only the four members of the band attended. No one brought their personal support team, no friends, no wives, no agents, no managers, no gurus, no personal trainers, no assistants of any kind. They cooked their own food. Hay imágenes que parecen inocentes… hasta que sabes lo que vino después.
Ella es Alice Liddell.
Durante años, fue la niña que inspiró a Lewis Carroll, el hombre que convirtió un paseo en barca en una de las historias más famosas de la literatura.
Pero detrás del cuento… hay una historia mucho más incómoda.
Carroll no era solo escritor.
También era fotógrafo obsesivo, meticuloso, perfeccionista.
Y tenía una fijación clara: retratar niñas, muchas veces en escenas idealizadas o incluso disfrazadas.
Una de las fotos más comentadas es la de Alice como “la pequeña mendiga”.
No es una imagen cualquiera.
Tiene algo raro.
Como si captara el momento en que la infancia empieza a romperse.
Durante un tiempo, la relación entre Carroll y la familia Liddell fue estrecha.
Visitas constantes, cartas, paseos… todo parecía normal dentro de los códigos victorianos.
Hasta que dejó de serlo.
Entre el 27 y el 29 de junio de 1863 pasa algo.
Y no sabemos exactamente qué.
En el diario de Carroll, esas páginas fueron arrancadas.
Literalmente cortadas con tijeras, probablemente años después por familiares que querían proteger su imagen.
Pero quedó una pista.
Una nota de una sobrina resume lo que había ahí: rumores de que Carroll estaba demasiado cerca de las niñas… o que en realidad utilizaba esa cercanía para aproximarse a la institutriz o a la hermana mayor, Lorina.
A partir de ahí, todo cambia.
Se acabaron las visitas.
Se cortó el contacto.
Silencio total.
Las teorías llevan más de un siglo dando vueltas:
Una dice que Carroll (con 31 años) pidió la mano de Alice (con 11) para cuando creciera.
Otra, que su interés real estaba en la hermana mayor.
Otra más simple —y bastante plausible—: que la madre, la señora Liddell, se cansó y decidió cortar por lo sano al ver una relación que empezaba a incomodarle.
No hay prueba definitiva de ninguna.
Pero el resultado es claro: ruptura total.
Años después, se volvieron a ver.
En 1891.
Dos personas que apenas se reconocían.
Carroll escribió que ella estaba “muy cambiada”.
El encuentro fue frío, formal, casi incómodo. Nada que ver con aquella relación intensa del pasado.
La última carta que le envió es aún más reveladora: correcta, distante, educada.
Nada de la cercanía de antes.
Se despidió con un simple “su afectísimo amigo”.
Fin de la historia.
Y luego está Alice.
Porque su vida tampoco fue un cuento.
Se casó con Reginald Hargreaves, tuvo hijos… y acabó viviendo una realidad bastante dura.
Perdió a dos de ellos en la Primera Guerra Mundial.
Y en 1928, ya mayor y con problemas económicos, tuvo que vender el manuscrito original que Carroll le había regalado: Las aventuras de Alicia bajo tierra.
Su propio origen convertido en objeto de subasta.
Lo vendió por una fortuna, sí.
Pero dejó claro que nunca le gustó ser “la Alicia de Carroll”.
Ese personaje la persiguió toda la vida.
Hay otro detalle que suele olvidarse.
El famoso paseo en barca de 1862, donde nació la historia, fue improvisado.
Carroll empezó a inventar el cuento para entretener a las niñas.
Alice le pidió que lo escribiera. Y él lo hizo solo para ella.
Ese manuscrito… era personal.
No estaba pensado para el mundo.
Y aun así, el mundo se lo quedó.
Al final, lo más inquietante no es lo que sabemos.
Es lo que falta.
Una página arrancada.
Cartas desaparecidas.
Un silencio que dura toda una vida.
Porque hay historias que no terminan con un punto final.
Terminan con cosas que alguien decidió borrar.

On "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, by Lewis Carroll
As I was wandering about in a marvelous book store in Morro Bay early last week I came across the Classics section. There I delightfully found Lewis Carroll’s combined "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass” in the Penguin Classics edition. Having not read these books, I thought this would be a fun diversion from some bleak histories that I recently completed.
We all have mostly heard of the main characters, White Rabbit, March Hare, Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, the King and Queen of Hearts, and of course Alice. As for me I was only loosely aware of the plot.
So on yesterday’s dreary rain filled day, I read Alice’s adventures. It was a good way to spend part of the day.
I’ll save “Through the Looking-Glass” for another rainy weekend.
