Jacqui Hamesʼs first-hand account of what she went through, which is only hinted at in #TheHack. How interesting to be watching this show at the same time the McSkimming affair is taking down top cops in New Zealand. #Leveson #ITV #ITVX https://hackinginquiry.org/jacqui-hames-my-line-of-duty/

I don't think getting as last minute nod from The Sun made any difference at all.
A needless sacrifice, and one I feel Starmer would have given up even without a endorsement from a Murdoch rag.Incidentally my wife has met Mr Leveson and he's a lovely, down to earth man.

#Leveson was ‘Labour’s unfinished business’ – now dumped by #Starmer to please #Murdoch https://skwawkbox.org/2024/07/24/leveson-was-labours-unfinished-business-now-dumped-by-starmer-to-please-murdoch/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=leveson-was-labours-unfinished-business-now-dumped-by-starmer-to-please-murdoch

Labour’s media policy | The new Labour government needs to ditch its pre-election caution and properly address the issue of media regulation in the UK | Tom O'Malley

Do we really have a free press in the UK?
Apparently not.
I've never understood why the UK allows 80% of our press to be foreign and/or non-dom owned.

@mikarv s180 OSA, entities exempt from committing a false communications offence: a recognised news publisher; the holder of a licence under the Broadcasting Act 1990 and 1996 in connection with anything done under the authority of the licence (also multiplex licence;
on-demand programme service);
anyone in connection with the showing of a film made for cinema to members of the public. Newspapers presumed to have real regulation... contrary to #Leveson -

"The precise issue tomorrow might seem obscure: whether to repeal section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act of 2013 – a piece of legislation which, thanks to the unscrupulous blocking tactics of the Conservatives, has never been allowed to enter into force.
Section 40 is the key to making the Leveson reforms of press regulation work. It was designed to make possible independent, effective press accountability".

In its plans to repeal Section 40, this government is discarding the last shred of its predecessors' commitments to honour the findings of #Leveson.
Hacked Off encourage you to write to your MP in protest of this draconian move. -

With the release of the draft #MediaBill and the threatened repeal of #Section40, this is a great time to check out the excellent archive at Discover Leveson. Fully searchable, easy-to-use - highly recommended!
-
This summary of the new draft #MediaBill from Hacked Off is spot-on - even the last remnants of the #Leveson reforms are being wiped away, after years of blatant refusal by the Tories to implement reforms supported by parliament. Their incentives are clear.
-
This landmark report provides further evidence that independent, accountable media outlets are the future of UK media - in fact, in many ways they are already more important than the mainstream, quietly providing thousands with the quality reporting they deserve.
-
@Henrysbridge @CrypticMirror @tomdean I also think that press regulation of some kind is necessary. Not censorship, but at a minimum a full, legal (not voluntary) implementation of all of #Leveson's recommendations, and a requirement for media owners to be UK residents and tax payers.
