  1. Opal, one of two white #ravens who are longtime residents at North Island Wildlife Recovery Center. She's not albino, please ignore my verbal error in vid.

Opal arrived at NIWRA centre in 2024 after being found with damaged feathers and reduced flight ability. In addition to her injuries, Opal has a condition called #leucism, which causes partial loss of pigmentation, making her more visible to predators, and results in weaker feather condition. She will remain at the centre.

Senior ranger Buck Brown knows the sandy beaches and dense bush of truwana/Cape Barren Island intricately. So when…

  6. Uniqueness
A leucistic otter feeds on a catfish in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. #Leucism, a lack of melanin, resulting in pale or white fur. Animals with this condition can be more vulnerable because they don’t have their normal camouflage.

  10. Spectacular: a leucistic Loon!

I've got around 22 photos of this beautiful bird. I'll put up four here, and then post another four.

  12. Have you ever seen a white Common Raven (Corvus corax)? No, this isn’t a new species… or a ghost. 👻This Raven’s striking pale plumage is the result of the genetic mutations leucism or albinism. Leucism is a reduction in all types of pigmentation, including melanin. Albinism is the inability to produce or distribute melanin.

  14. The leucistic Black-capped Chickadee remains a constant visitor to the yard this winter. The white cap looks like a lion’s mane resting on its back and the black mottling on its head is quite distinct.

I finally managed to take passable photos of the juvenile of my #crow friends, who got extreme #leucism

Curiously, of all the juvenile crows of this year, that little one is the only one that I still see around.

  18. lucky day - encountered this exceptional squirrel just now in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. It's an eastern gray #squirrel with #leucism

  19. I haven't seen any migrants at the feeders. The flock of American goldfinches in our yard sing all day. The males are molting into their summer feathers. The females are not as brightly colored, but I think this very pale goldfinch may be leucistic. The downy woodpeckers are chasing each other around the yard and the house finches are numerous and colorful. #birds #birding #birdsofmastodon #birdphotography #nature #HoosierMast #goldfinches #woodpecker #housefinch #leucism

  21. I saw this rare albinistic (correction: leucistic!) sparrow today.

Unfortunately, I didn't have a proper camera with me, and I wasn't able to get a good shot with my phone either.

  23. Happy Friday!

This morning our resident Swamp Wallaby was in the backyard and was so engaged with nibbling tasty grass that I managed to leave the house and take the car out without it hopping away. This also meant I got a few photos too.

Then, upon getting to work, I found the White Magpie again. Clearly a good day for wildlife.

  25. Interesting sighting a few weeks back in the #durham region of #ontario that I thought I would share here.
    This #bird is a #leucistic #blackcappedchickadee
#leucism causes a lack of black pigment in the #Birds feathers.

  26. Don't fret bird fans! Despite having to go in to the office today, I still came through with the goods.

Here's an unusual Australian Magpie with leucism (a condition that means the bird produces less melatonin than normal).
