  1. @nm thanks for sharing. i skimmed your text:

    > A philosophy against suffering cannot [...] build liberation through cruelty or peace through domination. If it does, then whatever purity it once had is gone.

without speaking about the specific incident, that made you write this post, i think there is a problem with this purity culture of #nonviolence. internally or externally, it pushes everyone to condemn the kirk shooter, to condemn hamas, and – as #MargaretKilljoy did repeatedly on her #podcast – to condemn animal liberation protesters. i'll link to that last one (as an example of what i dislike, even though it's by self-described "vegan" "anarchist" )

    but — !
    #racism is #politicalviolence.
    #zionism is #politicalviolence.
    #speciecism is #politicalviolence.
and all of these oppressive ideologies have killed and are killing disproportionately many
    more people.

if we condemn these acts of so-called #politicalviolence towards oppressors and demand "peace", let's be careful that we're not asking for that #negativepeace, which #MLK describes all to clearly in his #LetterFromBirminghamJail.

  2. I'm fortunate in my experience on #Mastodon regarding #racism, being male and ruthless in my use of replying or ignoring, and immediate muting or blocking.

I haven't had blatant racism in my mentions, and very little in my timeline, but there have been times when indirect, casual, racism has been regular.

Too many white people are in denial of their own racism and really need to understand and internalize the message of Dr. King's #LetterFromBirminghamJail, still relevant to most white people.

  3. On this day 61 years ago (April 16, 1963) Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote the legendary “Letter From Birmingham Jail”. Here is the letter in its entirety.

  4. @ericjwrites The intentional lack of awareness of the white male "independent".

#LetterFromBirminghamJail was written 60 years ago, precisely for you.

Carefully read it and take the necessary time to internalize its message and how it applies directly to you.

Use that self-awareness to become a consciously aware person so you can perhaps actually become the ally you mistakenly believe yourself to already be. You are not yet so.

To be an ally requires true awareness:
