The Art of Less Is Gestalten’s Answer to a World Full of More

The Art of Less is not a book about owning fewer things. That’s the first assumption gestalten wants readers to drop before they even crack the spine, and honestly, it’s overdue. Minimalism got turned into a real estate listing aesthetic somewhere around 2015, all white walls and empty countertops with nothing to say for itself. This new release wants that reputation gone for good. Gestalten built the book with Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen of Norm Architects and Sarah Dorweiler of Aesence, two people who’ve spent years arguing that restraint is a mental skill, not a shopping decision.

I haven’t held a copy yet. The Art of Less ships internationally on September 1, 2026, and doesn’t land in the US until October 6, so I’m reading press materials like everyone else right now. That’s fine, though. It gives me time to explain why I think this release is going to matter more than most design books this year and why I’ve already cleared shelf space for it.

So What Is The Art of Less Actually Trying to Say?

The publisher’s own framing is blunt: the pull toward simplicity gets stronger exactly when everything else feels out of balance. Not a style choice, a reflex. That’s a meaningfully different claim than most minimalism books make, since most of them treat white space as a look you can buy into. The Art of Less treats it as a cognitive and sensory response to overload, something closer to how your body reacts to a loud room by seeking a quiet corner.

Gestalten structures the argument through five thematic lenses: Balance, Contrast, Materiality, Rhythm, and Space. Twenty international artists, designers, and architects get profiled across those five sections, each one used as evidence that restraint produces presence rather than emptiness. That’s the thesis in one sentence, and it’s a sharper one than “less is more” ever managed to be.

Who’s Actually Behind It: Norm Architects and Aesence

Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen founded Norm Architects, a Copenhagen studio known for interiors that feel quiet without feeling cold. Wood, wool, stone—the kind of materials that ask to be touched rather than photographed. Sarah Dorweiler runs Aesence, a platform that’s spent years curating and questioning minimalist aesthetics from the outside looking in.

Gestalten pairs a practitioner with a curator on purpose here. Bjerre-Poulsen brings the hands-on view of someone who actually builds these spaces for clients. Dorweiler brings the critical distance of someone who studies why the aesthetic resonates emotionally in the first place. That combination is probably why the book reads less like a portfolio and more like an argument, at least based on how gestalten is positioning it.

The Five Lenses, and Why They’re Not Just Chapter Titles

Each lens works as its own small thesis rather than a loose category:

• Balance looks at how weight and asymmetry create calm instead of tension.
• Contrast uses friction between materials or forms to sharpen focus, featuring artists like Lee Ufan, whose sculpture has built a career out of elemental tension.
• Materiality asks what happens when texture does the emotional work that decoration used to do.
• Rhythm studies repetition: how a pattern can choreograph how a body moves through a space.
• Space covers architects like John Pawson and Álvaro Siza, both known for treating emptiness as a built material in its own right.

None of these are new ideas individually. What’s different is that The Art of Less puts all five side by side and asks readers to notice how they overlap instead of treating each one as a separate design trend.

Twenty Names Worth Knowing Before September

Here’s the full profiled lineup, organized by chapter, straight from gestalten’s own release:

A few of those names carry weight beyond the design world. Álvaro Siza is a Pritzker laureate. John Pawson basically defined what “minimalist architecture” means to people who’ve never studied architecture. Lee Ufan is a founding figure of the Mono-ha movement in postwar Japanese art. Putting them next to twelve younger, less established names is a bold editorial choice, and it’s one I want to see land well.

My Own Framework for Reading This Book

I want to be upfront that these next two terms are my own reading lens, not gestalten’s official language. I’m coining them here because I think they’re useful for talking about what The Art of Less is doing.

First, what I’d call the Restraint Dividend. This is the idea that cutting visual or informational noise doesn’t just declutter a space; it pays back attention and calm at a rate disproportionate to what got removed. Remove ten percent of the clutter and gain back thirty percent of the focus. The book’s whole premise runs on this math, even if it never states it that plainly.

Second, the Noise Ceiling. Every environment, digital or physical, has a threshold where more input stops adding value and starts registering as stress instead. Once you cross that ceiling, additional stimulus doesn’t inform you; it just wears you down. The Art of Less seems built entirely around helping readers locate that ceiling in their own lives, then design around it.

Why This Book Lands at the Right Moment

I run a design publication, so I live inside the exact problem this book is describing. Search behavior has changed. People ask ChatGPT or Gemini a question and get an answer without ever opening a website. Feeds refresh faster than anyone can process what’s in them. The Art of Less isn’t marketed as a commentary on any of that directly, but its timing says plenty on its own.

There’s a reason minimalism keeps resurfacing every time information gets denser. It happened with print in the sixties, with digital interfaces in the 2000s, and it’s happening again now with generative tools flooding every feed with content nobody asked for. Gestalten didn’t plan this release around an AI news cycle, but the argument fits the moment almost too well.

What I Expect When I Finally Get My Hands on It

I expect the photography to be excellent, since gestalten rarely misses on production value. Full color, stitch-bound, 320 pages at 24.5 by 33 centimeters—that’s a serious physical object, not a paperback you toss in a bag.

My one worry, and I’ll say it plainly, is that a 320-page hardcover priced at 100 dollars risks becoming exactly the kind of status object the book’s own thesis argues against. A book about restraint that costs as much as a nice dinner for two and sits on a coffee table mostly unread would be a strange outcome. I hope the writing earns its shelf space rather than just decorating it. I’ll know for sure once I’ve actually read it cover to cover.

In Theorie ist das nicht ganz falsch. Und am Ende werden wir als Menschheit jeden Puzzlestein brauchen, um es ein bisschen weniger schlimm zu machen. Aber! Großes Aber! In Praxis kann man dieses optimistisch anmutende Framing nicht so stehen lassen, denn: Nein, die Techniken werden aller Voraussicht nach nicht schnell und umfänglich genug kommen, um wirklich "den Druck aus dem Kessel zu nehmen". Entsprechend gilt: Baut da nicht zu viel auf Sand, bzw. setzt nicht zu viel Hoffnung drauf, und v.a.: #Actthefucknow mit Mitigation! Denn ohne EFFEKTIVE Minderung der #Emissionen durch weitreichende #Transformation in allen Lebensbereichen, die auch mit Änderungen unseres #Lebensstil einhergehen, wird es nicht funktionieren. Besser als die @DENEFF hätte man das Vorlegen des #Gebäudemodernisierungsgesetz #GModG vom @BMWK nicht kommentieren können: "Ausgerechnet jetzt – mit Vollgas in die Abhängigkeitsfalle". Und:
„Einen schlechteren Zeitpunkt hätten die Ministerien nicht wählen können – gerade mit Blick auf die derzeitige Energiekrise und ihre Folgen. Hier kommt die Rechnung dafür, dass schon unter der #Ampel, erst recht aber jetzt seitens der #Bundesregierung @BMWK @BMWSB_Bund nicht genügend Impetus auf die #Effizienzwende gelegt wird: Der #Energieverbrauch steigt erstmals wieder in der #Industrie und im #GHD-Sektor, und das trotz leicht sinkender #Wertschöpfung. Hier wird Potenzial verschenkt!!!

Wichtig sind jetzt umso mehr verlässliche und klare Rahmenbedingungen und stetige Signale und Planungssicherheit über den Kurs (nämlich in Richtung #Transformation und #Energieeffizienz!)!!!
