In the UK the main issue with rat vectored disease is Leptospirosis (Weil's Disease).I may be out of date (I retired 15 years ago from 40 years as a Biomedical Scientist) but the best way of screening for this was through blood tests.
In the UK we'd undertake Liver Function Tests (LFTs) - specifically Total Bilirubin, ALT (may still be called SGPT in some places), Alkaline Phosphatase, and Gamma GT - these tests will pick up both long term (chronic) and recent (acute) liver issues from any source including infection.As I say there may be newer, more specific tests, but these LFTs will cover many bases, and they're easy, routine and - if it's important - cheap!

(I had a mild dose of #Leptospirosis about 35 years ago, and was very unwell for a few weeks)

In the UK the main issue with rat vectored disease is Leptospirosis (Weil's Disease).I may be out of date (I retired 15 years ago from 40 years as a Biomedical Scientist) but the best way of screening for this was through blood tests.
In the UK we'd undertake Liver Function Tests (LFTs) - specifically Total Bilirubin, ALT (may still be called SGPT in some places), Alkaline Phosphatase, and Gamma GT - these tests will pick up both long term (chronic) and recent (acute) liver issues from any source including infection.As I say there may be newer, more specific tests, but these LFTs will cover many bases, and they're easy, routine and - if it's important - cheap!
