Low Earth Orbit Adventures is my relaxing newtonian 3D space sim, DRM-free, source-code included, steam + itch.io, and developed on Linux, releasing later this year.
20 years ago there was a small but vibrant Linux gaming community (any one remember Loki???)
Could I get away with making LEO Adventures a Linux exclusive to see if support is there?

Pretty happy with this 2D particle emitter effect I got going for the background of the score screen in LEO Adventures.
It's a game celebrating human ingenuity in space but also I've snuck in a bunch of more human-deprecating stuff too :D :D

Added a text scaling option in the menu. I can't guarantee it doesn't clutter the UI but it improves the game a lot on handheld screens. I get more excited about accessibility stuff than the gameplay sometimes 😁

Liberation and Low Earth Orbit Adventures running on my older 2020 android phone.
Fonts are readable but could use a scaling option. Turns out designing for accessibility makes porting a lot easier :D

Ryan Gosling in Peril. Elephant Delegation Speaks. Having a lot of fun writing the Lunar Times.

Not bad for 20 minutes messing about. Was just going to use it as a throw away background decal but now wondering if I can fit it in the game somehow :D :D

Put together a build of LEO Adventures to send to some people. Only five missions and a bit bare bones but complete and polished enough to release on Steam as a little game right now if I wanted.
Hard sci-fi but makes me laugh. Delivers on the near-future NASA-punk aesthetic. Not too punishing but really explores the Newtonian gameplay mechanics.
Very happy with it.

Been polishing up a new build of Low Earth Orbit Adventures to send to people and it's been nice to do a few passes over it.
Some parts of the game like the thruster and camera controls are now on their fourth or fifth draft and are probably in their final form (I hope).
The NPC logic and half the missions are what's left to do. Nowhere near a "full first draft" but definitely past half way.

A little overview of the new pizza delivery mission in Low Earth Orbit Adventures
-
A pizza company that only delivers to space? Has to be super short and a bit goofy.
Was thinking PizzaX but already taken!
Suggestions gratefully received

Played about an hour of Low Earth Orbit Adventures on the couch before a game breaking bug.
Took a lot of notes but... it's coming together and not a total embarrassment.

People were asking for bigger solar panels and I have delivered

Based on a true story.

You never know how far you can go until you go too far

My space station generator is finally working and integrated into the game.
Sensible blue-prints, semi-realistic modules, airtight structure, dockable, Newtonian physics working, player can add or remove modules... people will never know how hard it was to get this working... omg just pain pain pain
-
Finally finished the first draft of the Station USA mission in #LEOAdventures.
Took an eternity but it's quite fun and has potential to be a lot of fun after more editing.
Had to rewrite massive chunks of the game code but pretty solid now.

Um, this is realistic space physics, we just don't do it very often
-
My "new game" screen for this space game is so ugly... and it's the second screen people see. So sad.
Gamedev.place folk please put me out my misery with some suggestions.

A little too low earth orbit
-
Three days into unpicking this gnarly logic issue with my game and while I am absolutely non-mathematical enough to have wandered into an unsolvable maths problem I am also pretty sure that means I am also unlikely to have created an unsolvable maths problem in the first place... so just gotta keep chugging away at it I guess

Low Earth Orbit Adventures will be on show and playable at WIP night tomorrow at Sabby Co-op in Melbourne along with other work-in-progress games. If you're around drop by!

CW: comparison to ship design in Project Hail Mary
Hmm, the Project Hail Mary ship looks a lot like the Liberator 🤔 ... no wonder I liked it

I call it the SS Ryan Gosling

Station Aotearoa (formerly New Zealand), the Prime Minister's executive shuttle, and a gangway for easy transfer between the two. Getting this animation working was weirdly difficult but I got there!
For the year 2041 I invented a new flag for NZ ... well, they did it for us in Event Horizon so it's only fair! 🥝 💝

Spent way too long on this and it still needs another pass or two. Station USA under construction!

Had a really weird week on Low Earth Orbit Adventures. There were four "big issues" I had been kicking down the road for a while but I solved them all.
It was like I had four balls of string that were completely tangled and I just kind of untangled them first go without any shortcuts. A very strange feeling.
Just really intense, complicated work that... worked out? I wasn't even in some sort of hyper focus gremlin mode, just got lucky I think! I'll take it!

Holiday reading - the making of Star Cops. 350 pages on a show that lasted nine episodes (and inspired Low Earth Orbit Adventures). Perfection.
