I was travelling onwards to Leknes, the second largest town in Lofoten (after Svolvær in which I had found enough vegan food last year). I forgot it was a Sunday. On Sundays only small shops (under 50m2) are allowed to be open in Norway. Luckily one shop in Leknes was open until 23:00 - Bunnpris. I was craving smoked tofu. Such a craving happens to me, usually in vegan food deserts, and I take it as a sign that I need more protein. They had no tofu of any kind. I paid 25 eur for:
2 bananas
a litre of vanilla flavoured soya milk
A kilo of new potatoes
A bunch of spring onions
A small jar of red pepper stuffed green olives
A tetrapak of black beans (yes in Scandinavia legumes come in tetrapak), about 230g when drained
A small jar of sliced pickled cucumbers which turned out to be 23% sugar by weight so I had to soak them in water 3 times to draw some sugar out
An iceberg lettuce
I boiled all the potatoes and made a salad using all the ingredients except soya milk and bananas
I had some salt and pepper but no oil, but the olives were enough, it was edible and enough for 5 portions. I drank almost all soya milk while cooking. -
In Lofoten today, and it's been a damp one. We've also had to shorten the stay because wind conditions are forecast to make tendering to and from the ship too dangerous later so we've only had a short time ashore. We got the free bus from the port to Leknes where there's very little to do or see so we just walked back to the port by a more scenic route. If we'd been able to see it.
