I am drafting a "rules of association". It is partly an exercise, and partly an guess at of something that may become real.

But I am tired of organisations infiltrated by arseholes, and I wonder if it is possible to put standards of behaviour front and centre.

17. Membership hurdles.
17.1 The association insists on the following psychological characteristics and standards of behaviour from all members.
17.2 No member will be accepted, and existing members will be expelled if they fail any of these hurdles.

Notice that at the bottom of the screen, it indicates that this is just the first of 93 screens. Like, someone is really going to read through 93 screens? Or even want to read something that long that is emailed to them?
This does not serve consumers well.

The former one, passive voice and all, may be even more hostile. "Be governed" means the governance comes from the outside.... "Obey, or you will be punished."It's a subtle difference. And maybe I'm reading too much into it. Both phrases really mean "…and the horse you rode in on."

There's a difference between "Please be governed accordingly" and "Govern yourself accordingly." I've always preferred the latter since I like to avid passive voice. It credits the recipient with their own agency and responsibility for the consequences of their actions. In other words, "You, there! Get your shit together or there will be consequences!"…
