Continuing in this vein, let me say a few things about #DrivingInIreland. I was scared shitless when I first arrived but now I zip from county to county with hardly a care.
1. #NarrowRoads. In North America those “2 lane” country roads wouldn’t even be one lane. Then sometimes they are one lane! And still 80 kph! But now, I’m barely phased. Stone wall one side, hedgerow the other, and an oncoming lorry (bonus points); just another day driving in Carlow.
2. #Roundabouts. I have a love/hate relationship with them. When well done, the universe flows well. When ye don’t use your indicators (more bonus points) correctly, the gears of the world can grind horrendously. And let’s not over use a good thing (looking at you, Portlaoise- more roundabouts in one town than most European countries have!)
3. #Speed. I’ve complained about this before but jeeze, the guys who drive 80 kph on the N80 between Carlow town and Portlaoise, without any relation to the actual posted speed limit. 80 in the 100 zone, slowing everyone down, then hit the 50 zone in Arles and zip! you’re off, still humming away at 80.
4. #LeftsideDriving. Not an issue anymore. Keep my butt in the middle of the road and we’re good.
