  1. In the U.S., meaningful centre and left alternatives to right-wing politics do exist — and they matter. This thread series highlights viable progressive parties and movements, their strengths, weaknesses, and how they could work together through coalitions, endorsements, and shared platforms to strengthen democracy and social justice. 🧵

  2. Join us, Left Book Club and the Industrial Workers of the World @iww for an online conversation with Interregnum member Panos Theodoropoulos about precarity, organising and how capitalism socialises us into participating in our own exploitation.

  4. Yes, given the chaos, Your Party supporters should now cut their losses and join the Green Party (E&W).

"This [poll] makes the Green Party the primary opposition party to the neo-fascist Reform UK – and is gaining ground on the static Farage outfit."

  5. I agree with the general sentiment that antifascists needs to be more united and not fall for every issue fascists throw at them to distract them from facism. However, I can't help but hear many calls for this as "marginalized group A and B, wait your turn". Because there are no turns, fighting fascism is a task that can never stop - as we're seeing right now because way too few people have been fighting it in the past. We wouldn't be where we are right now if more people would have worked against it early on.

Like, yeah, don't scare away people from fighting Nazis because they aren't vegans or drive a big family car. People of all sorts need to understand fighting fascists is not a "leftist" issue, it's a thing all of society needs to be a part of, including the people who might not agree on some things or are unsure on the details.

However, for many the main reason for being on the left side of the political spectrum is the desire to create a better tomorrow with more than the bare minimum of human rights and basic decency and respect for everyone. A planet worth living on, a society everyone can thrive in. We can't do this if we tell various marginalized groups to wait their turn and not stand up for themselves, nor for lecturing allies about supporting their causes instead of leaving them alone.

We might have different opinions about how a better tomorrow might look like and figuring this out sometimes needs debates and prioritization in how we do things, yes. But let's not opt out of this alltogether and throw a lot of people's wish for being respected under the bus. (And considering it's Halloween month and "culture as a costume" is likely going to be on the table again, I have an inkling who is going to be lectured the most soon...)

  6. In case you missed it:

As UK politics turns both right and left, how do we get degrowth onto the agenda?

"Neither the embryonic Your Party, nor even the Green Party, provide evidence that their approach, extant or emerging, at this point in time, is adequate to the scale of the existential crisis facing humanity. This could change, and it should be a focus of the small degrowth movement in these islands "

I don't agree with Paul Mason's approach to immigration politics here, nor do I think he pays sufficient attention to Starmer's shift to the right since being elected leader, but his analysis and criticism of the Corbyn-Sultana party is compelling.

Although I am sceptical about the prospects of this endeavour, repelled by the politics of Andrew Murray, and doubtful about the coherence of the whole project, I do understand how frustrated many feel by the current hegemony of the Labour right.

  9. I like the concept of Acid Communism.

In these times it is important to focus not so much on being anti-capitalist, but to the emancipatory possibilities that lie in breaking free from it.

Similarly important is to recognise that the prevailing narrative of capitalism as good completely dominates all discourse.

One's chances at winning are greatly improved if one keeps focus on emancipatory potentials being lost & showing oneself how.

Mamdani’s mayoral campaign shows a successful playbook for the left — but years of history united NYC progressives against Andrew Cuomo.

  15. #CurrentlyListening to an excellent conversation with #NaomiKlein via #OnTheNose podcast from #JewishCurrents magazine. It's from last November but it covers a lot of history and it's still very relevant to current (and probably future) events. TBH I don't know much about Naomi but she seems like quite an intellectual powerhouse. Just hanging out here in the North Atlantic waiting for winter (terrifying that it has not arrived!) worrying about housing for all, and appreciating the beauty of the planet and my location esp! Spectacular vista around every corner and no spot more than 50Km's (might be miles) from the ocean.
