Some theories from the comments:
* you’re guaranteed to escape a real-life maze if you always turn left, so people do the same in games.
* most of us read left to right (well I’m Arabic and that’s right to left but I play games in English) so perhaps we pick left because of that.

Gaming observation and survey:
Whenever I’m faced with a choice of left or right, I always choose left first. Doesn’t matter if it’s a path, a menu choice, a skill tree, whatever. I sometimes just go left for the sake of going left 😅
I’ve always assumed this is because I’m left-handed so naturally bias towards my dominant side.
It would be interesting to see what other people do.
