I've been focusing so much on learning to paint color, value and shading that I've been forgetting how to add expression to my subjects, which I was much better at when still doing lineart only. So I'm experimenting with that again. I drew after reference, but greatly exagerated the rythm lines of the tree.

this lesson on lighting for primitives was such a mixed bag

there's this terrible feeling when a work starts off badly, and things just get worse and worse.

with the cube, i struggled to develop solid edges between faces. this led to worrying that it looked bad, and subsequently losing focus of the task at hand: make it look like there's a light source. i tried to micromanage my lighting by using a small brush. the shadow is both far too round, and strong, implying a VERY close light-source which is not supported by the top face of the image.

with the sphere, i worked swiftly. fast, confident brush strokes using a massive (1000 px) soft brush. i let the tool do the heavy lifting, and it produced wonderfully diffuse light. the same cannot be said for the cast shadow at the bottom - here, i switched to a small brush and tried to "paint" a shadow. this resulted in a much less believable shadow.

in other words: micromanaging pixels is no way to paint for lighting!

Exclusively painted with the Citadel AoS starter set, with an overturned frisbee as a palette!

Quite the journey, as painting in front of the tent with great weather isn't great painting weather and painting straight from the pot using a Citadel starter brush is just the worst possible experience 😂

Worked on a lot of small details like eyes on the #Dungeonbowl team, faffed about on #BloodBowl3 (witness the first ever block of a troll), and added magical glow to the portal runes.

Funny thing: the GW Nurgle were the first thing I started painting just over 4y ago, so revisiting the models is funny. First I couldn't even hit the eyes without smudging the face and now I missed part of it.
