I am creating my own German-Spanish learning materials for my personal day to day learning tailored to my personal use cases.

Once I am done collecting I will hire a professional native speaking translator to replace the initial automatic translations with proper ones.

Better investment than those learning app subscriptions.

I believe any learning app that wants your money monthly instead of once has not your best interest in mind.

I'm intermediate in Spanish. I've learned and lost many languages. The best method I know to learn a language is to immerse yourself. If you cannot immerse yourself, then you have to simulate it. Here's what I do:

- I use DeepL to figure out vocabulary that I don't know, or to polish my Spanish.

- I create flashcards related to my life.

- I listen to music in Spanish.

- I read books in Spanish, usually with the help of an English or French translation.

- I watch shows in Spanish.

- I participate in a conversation group.

- I use https://www.spanishdict.com for grammatical questions.

Some of this should be adaptable to any level. My conversation group is intermediate, but I recall seeing groups for beginners or others that assume fluency.

Back on Thursday I went to a few bookstores here in Valencia. One of them had a separate chess section, where I saw books by Miguel Illescas. I considered buying the book on endings, but after a bit of research I saw that the "Curso completo de ajedrez" basically contains all four paperbacks, and the ebook version was only 9.49€ :neofox_book:

Now I can work on my Spanish and on my chess at the same time, and I can use the Chessnut Go to play through the exercises against the engine :neofox_happy:

#learningspanish 'Tiempo Condicional' learnt today: reading Spanish OSM tagging discussions. For me unknown verb conjugations like " ..se debería usar..". " la cambiaríamos ...". Not yet in my course...

Researching: in English we would say "we should, would, could, ..use, change etc". But Spanish has single 'Condicional' tense. Very often used in our field as we (usually) talk politely in terms of recommendations, how things could/should be done (programmed, tagged!).

"Buscarle tres pies al gato" (for @delawen ). Translates literally: "to look for three feet on the cat" in English. However, the phrase is idiomatic, like "estar en las nubes" (=daydreaming, not about Cloud Tech), and actually means "to nitpick". In Dutch it is simply: "Muggenziften". Both expressions apply to me btw.. @jorgesanz

@thegrumpyenby I understand, makes sense. Portugal still has a way to grow in that regard. As a supplement to your Spanish course, I can recommend Carlos' "Dreaming Spanish" YouTube channel. Hours of listening to his channel was a big part of taking me from knowing 5 curse words in Spanish and not much more to a solid B1+ in a year. Spain is a great place, and I'm blessed to live just across the Guardiana river.

Why #Anki kinda stinks for language learning. I don't know the content maker well at all, but his list is everything I found frustrating and ineffective about the app/program. It really derailed my novice Spanish studies. I don't recommend it anymore, _especially_ to folks with #adhd issues. He's inspiring me to get back to my old notebook methods, and I want to check out his routines further as well.

I know it's because of licensing hijinks, but it's really annoying to subscribe to Paramount Plus (to see #startrek) and find only the English language audio tracks there.

To watch Star Trek in Spanish, I have to start my VPN, claim to be from Mexico, and watch Star Trek on Netflix!

Many programs in the US *have* Spanish language tracks, but they aren't available in the US. Dios mio!

Hmm, cool...Live Transcribe on my phone will transcribe podcasts I'm playing too. And in Spanish even. Only drawback is no offline transcription for non-english languages. Ah well. Still, that's pretty handy for seeing if I got the translation right in my head...

If anyone is #LearningSpanish, I highly recommend #Wlingua app. I've learnt more in half an hour with it, than I did in weeks with #duolingo.
It actually explains what it is teaching you, as opposed to just throwing words at you 😅
