In France at present. Musing, as usual, on how to get better at the French language.
The gendarmes were doing a house to house enquiry this afternoon, asking for sightings of a particular vehicle.
Being quite pleased with myself I asked if there was any distinguishing mark of this car, or whether it was just an ordinary white Toyota “une Toyota blanche” — the vehicle was a car, a car is feminine (une voiture) so I used “une” and “blanche”, being designators for a feminine item.
Turns out I was being too clever.The noun wasn’t “voiture” but rather “Toyota” and — as the gendarme revealed by his answer “non, juste un Toyota blanc” — the noun “Toyota” is masculine.
What’s the betting that any new word adopted into French is masculine? (Compare with German, in which, as I have been informed, most new words adopted recently arrive as neuter “das”). In French there is no neuter. Everything has to either be feminine or masculine. Must be a nightmare for enbies.
I rely on those here who know about such things to set aright any errors in my toots.

So i got this sentence in Duolingo and it translates into "You are my Hero (Hero as a female here)", but i found it funny cause the sentence sounds like "You are my Heroin" and then i started researching what Heroin means in french.
Apparently (according to google) "héroïne" means both Hero (female) and Heroine, so i instantly asked both my french buddies and they were like "Huh, that's odd" and nothing more...
Like, did they never notice?
