Lauʻīpala == yellow tang
It’s a compound word (according to Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund website), “lauʻī” meaning ti leaf plus “pala” meaning yellowed, so literally “yellowed ti leaf”!

#duolingo taught me this word a long time ago, but I don’t think it ever showed me this image until just recently! Since I have finished the course, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen anything new in it. They last updated the course a couple of years ago. The #duolingoHawaiian course has only 25 units, the popular languages like Spanish have more than 100 and with a lot more features like speaking exercises and stories.

My first time in uTalk finding a flub. The Hawaiian written text for this exercise is “Hiki iā ʻoe ke ʻoka i kaʻa hoʻolimalima noʻu?” but both voice tracks say, “E kaʻa hoʻolimalima noʻu, ke ʻoluʻolu” (more like, “a taxi for me, please” - either is fine I’m sure, but they don’t match! #uTalk

I ran across the term “copula” in a mathematical context the other day, but when I looked it up, the first meaning that appeared was the linguistic one, meaning: a linking word. For example, in English, “is.” I also learned that the term “zero copula” is used to describe a language that doesn’t use linking words. I stayed at a hostel earlier this week which had this whiteboard in the dining area with the greeting “welcome!!” in
various #languages. I was a little tempted to ask them to change “Aloha!!” to “Welina mai!!” which would be a better translation of #welcome. “Aloha” is more of a generic greeting. But, at least most people will recognize #aloha! #OleloHawaii #LearnHawaiian #hawaiian
There are still a few bugs in the newly added #Duolingo #Hawaiian lessons. There’s at least three words which I keep getting marked wrong because I use the ʻokina and the response, incorrectly, expects an apostrophe: ke kumu lāʻau (the tree), ka hale ʻaina (the restaurant), and ka ʻalemanaka (the calendar). #OleloHawaii #LearnHawaiian #olelo #hawaii
