Granted, some areas of #InternationalLaw are working fine. Nearly all countries honour treaties on the allocation of radio frequencies & satellite orbits, just as nearly all motorists drive on the correct side of the road.…

But when it comes to #HumanitarianLaw, there is no consensus. The high-minded principles that led the #LeagueOfNations to set up the first world court, in the hope that “law & justice” would trump “diplomatic expediency”, are clashing with the hard reality of #geopolitics.

It's a breaking point of something, just not sure that it's the end of the UN. Maybe NATO?

Another example is King’s loathing of the collective-security provisions of the #LeagueOfNations, which he thought might ensnare #Canada in a war in some distant land. King’s “muddling” played a critical role in that body’s failure to stand up to #Mussolini and #Hitler, thereby empowering the #fascist duo in their territorial ambitions.

#UnitedNations could, you know, demand full and unlimited access to *any* citizen, subject or prisoner of a member state. Or if that and the #HumanRights charter are not acceptable to some regimes, they could simply leave the organization.

The current system leaves the #UN at best a talking shop and at worst an enabler of the abuses at a massive scale.

Doing some research on #Israel v. #Palestine tonight. To understand everything, I went back to the #BalfourDeclaration. A couple interesting footnotes from my research so far:

1. #Palestine was actually ruled by the #OttomanEmpire, and they lost that land when the lost in #WWI. The #LeagueOfNations then gave the land to #Britain who decided to split the land between Jews and Arabs. Neither state from what I’m seeing was actually autonomous though, and technically owned and ruled by #Britain still.

2. While there were some skirmishes here and there (I will dig deeper into what these skirmishes actually were eventually), the first major armed conflict in regards to fighting over this territory between Jews and Arabs was actually caused by the Arabs, when they murdered two Jews and then Jews murdered two Arabs in response. It led to the Arabs rising up against #Britain in 1936 in the #GreatRevolt, arguing for independence from #Britain and an end to immigration and property rights for Jews withing #MandatoryPalestine.

I’ll need to dig more into the weeds on this but, interestingly this does not really paint the Palestinian side in a particularly positive light.

According to this, #Britain formed the two states with the #LeagueOfNations after #WWI, a plan which was acted on after #WWII. Before that, Jews were emigrating back to #Israel (known as #Palestine), but the video doesn’t note any conflict. Did the violence begin only after the #UN drew up the lines of the two states, and would the Jews and Arabs have otherwise formed one united state, the longer that emigration continued?
