I've seen https://arewedecentralizedyet.online on HN today, and it's ötter bs, makes me angry.
Why?
- website doesn't work without js. but it totally could.
- we don't need a website for every chart grafic data that could be just posted as regular post
- it got hundreds of comments on HN, while HN still not allowing guest comments without registration, neither via ActivityPub

Regarding the biased representation of the website itself. I'm not a fan of BS (or bitch@). Somehow only 2 projects showcased, completely ignoring other real decentralized alternatives like ZeroNet, AutonomiDweb, @librecast, nostr, Freenet \ Hyphanet, Scuttlebot, Retroshare, Etherium, blockchain-based projects, #LBRY , dApps, etc
^That's main complain of my post.

Quality != Quantity

I do prefer using Fediverse+ActivityPub over BS. However, what irratates me is data representation of belief that many servers\instances on many domains on many clients are good actors and sign of decentralization. It might be good under perfect weather conditions, but it is not protected against Sybill attack, 51% attack, bots, sockpuppetry etc ...

If Jack\BS spawn hundreds of servers under hundred domains with LLMs larping as humans, to look more "decentralized" on https://arewedecentralizedyet.online - you don't have software or algorythmic protection from that.
Applications mentioned above could offer an such protection, but they lacks of modern developers & resources.

turns out that's a site of Rob Ricci, a research professor (I wonder if CS?) who built cloud infrastructre (so he should be aware of how easy is to spin hundreds of vm's with 1 click)

@happyborg I do believe that network protocol projects, such as AutonomiDweb, should be in hands of Non-Profits.
ActivityPub specification, standartisation is in hands of non profit w3c.
I've thought Mastodon Gmbh is a commercial company from Germany, but internet says it's 503 Non profit in US. I won't mind if private company does fair business with FLOSS.
But BS is full for profit, so they have incentive to manipulate market\network. (so are Threads)

Personally I feel that #Peertube is the best, but you could also check out #LBRY / #Odysee, or just plain stick a video player on your own domain and play it from there.

The nice thing about Peertube though is that it will show up in Peertube searches and other people can help host it as Peertube makes it available as a Torrent. Actually, you could torrent it, too which shares the hosting load, but won't do much for discoverability.

The term "Nazi race science" gets bandied about a lot to explain more genteel #racist theories like those of The Bell Curve but that's not what this is. This is literally just Nazi race science, straight up. In fact the Nazi scientists probably actually understood entry level statistics and so their theories were probably significantly less racist than one that purports to shovel the 20% of the world that is African into the bottom 2% of the #IQ curve.

For bonus points this guy is a #crypto bro. He founded a scam called #LBRY that existed to host nazi race science videos that got put out of its misery by the courts.

But it's equally applicable to any virtual space in which pseudonymic entities can interact.

But here's the thing. It's impossible to capture 100% of someone's attention on any given day for a single platform, no matter the diversity of interfaces they allow – as long as others can come along, leverage the same ideas, and implement their own interfaces using their own architecture, and cater to a particular audience.

This is how MySpace, which had eaten the vast bulk of casual personal webspace, died a horrible death and was replaced by Facebook and Twitter, which themselves feel pressure from old-school blogging, the Fediverse, Meta, and even newer things along the way.

As long as the market is not controlled, someone can always come along and do a better job for some portion of the market and use that to open the door for even more people.

That's the place to put your attention if you're concerned about it.
