This week we’re caught in #Indecision

James Taylor, “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” from One Man Dog (1972)

    Lyric:
Go away then, damn you, go on and do as you please
You ain't gonna see me gettin' down on my knees
I'm undecided, and your heart's been divided
You've been turnin' my world upside down

( #MisheardLyrics side note: For years I heard that as “Go away then, Daniel” - and there was this Daniel, see…💔)

The whole “One Man Dog” album is kind of quirky, with short passages gluing the more conventional songs together, giving it a herky-jerky quality that keeps it from feeling like just another gentle #LaurelCanyon #SingerSongwriter outing.

Those song fragments don’t stand on their own, so this album is best listened to all the way through, but "Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" is a beautiful ballad filled with longing, slipping into your ears with Taylor’s smooth voice, complete with sax solo. Cliché? Maybe, but another word for cliché might be “standard,” and songs become standards for a reason - and to me this song is as lovely and timeless as any standard in the so-called Great American Songbook.

Oh… speaking of sacred cow cults, stumbled across this one earlier today (it's cold out, I'm bored) youtube.com/watch?v=Ml8RmDXBM9 (which dutifully also cites the late Dave McGowen's also fun book about the music industry connection)

  3. The astute lyricism & throwback folk of Leah Senior's new LP is hitting the spot today. Unashamedly sounding like it came out of the Hollywood hills 50 years ago - where it would have held it's head high, the comfortingly familiar compositions & consummate musicianship are the perfect companion for her enlightened introspection & self-aware musings on the creative process.

  8. #PaulKantner of #JeffersonAirplane died on 28 January 2016, on exactly the same date as Airplane co-founder Signe Toly Anderson.

A prolific member of the #LaurelCanyon scene, Kantner wrote Wooden Ships with #DavidCrosby and recorded a concept album with Crosby, Nash, Jerry Garcia et al.

Crosby nicknamed Kantner and Grace Slick, then a couple, “Baron von Tollbooth & the Chrome Nun”, which became the name of a 1973 album. Rolling Stone called Kantner and Slick “the psychedelic John and Yoko”.

  9. @HumanGadfly I think Crosby inspired the role but the actor is #DennisHopper.
I loved the recent Echo in the Canyon which featured interviews with Crosby and the many musical connections made in #LaurelCanyon.

“Such a cozy room, the windows are illuminated by the evening, sunshine through them, fiery gems…”
