Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio came out on Netflix this weekend! It’s a gorgeous stop-motion film, I really loved it.
Charming, full of heart, great performances, nuanced animation…just wonderful. Very much GDT’s signature, with childlike wonder and realities of death against the backdrop of Mussolini’s fascist Italy.
Plus it was animated here in PDX!

Have been watching Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities episodes piecemeal and was v excited for The Viewing (episode 7), by the writer-director pair that did Mandy. Was not disappointed!
It sets up an intriguing atmosphere that doesn't overstay its welcome, and a mystery box that actually pays off. And the aesthetic is perfection.

CW: Crimes of the Future (2022), body horror
Enjoyed this a lot. In a near-future world without pain or infection, what is intimacy, art, change?
It has familiar Cronenberg elements I love: bespoke organic machinery, human evolution, drifting dreamlike eroticism, body-technology ports, beautiful decay of run-down buildings.
And the way he understands/frames physicality and pain means the fleshy stuff doesn't bother me.
