Since #NovaLauncher is about to die, I've started to take a look at some #Android #launchers that got recommendations on the web.
I have to confess: don't get why people like #NiagaraLauncher:

Instead of taking advantage of spacial memory and quick access to frequently used apps in an array of icons, the user seems to scroll through a very long all-app list with only a few favorites on top with optional search. Just one dimension. It's so much more effort to invoke an app ...
IMO this kind of minimalism sacrifices usability in order to get a better look at the desktop background - which is simply black in my case.
Has anybody a recommendation for a launcher that is as much similar as possible to Nova? 🤔

CW: Gushing About My Home Screen Because I'm Weird
I finally found an #accessible and feature-rich alternative to the default #Android launcher on my phone, Quickstep: Nova Launcher.
OK yes I know, it's one of the most popular launchers on the app store. And while I don't know the specifics, I do know it is not open source and is in fact owned by some ad analytics company, so not privacy-friendly either. In my defense, I did try all the recently-updated launchers on F-droid first, but none did what I need: allowed me to accessibly drag one app atop another to make a folder, then add other apps to that folder using convenient checkboxes.
Samsung's launcher on my old phone would let me do that. Quickstep expects me to drag each app into the folder individually, and I am too lazy. Nova Launcher not only works well for this, but when I'm dragging apps (both with #Talkback and #Jieshuo) it actually tells me which row and column I'm on, which really should be a basic thing and I'm in love.
So here we go. On the bottom, the dock with 5 items, and with how little I use Signal these days I might narrow it down to four. In the middle, five alphabetically-sorted folders, with self-explanatory names (except for that one folder that contains mainly time-based things, like the alarm clock, tea timer, menstrual calender, and workout timer I barely ever open :ms_sweat: , but also the banking apps for some reason? I'll figure it out.). And on the top, the persistant search bar, the app drawer button and even the weather, which feels like the sort of luxury I'll barely ever check but love having anyway.
I have no idea if everything looks neat and readable visually, as I did not mess with icon appearance much beyond changing the shapes to squares because they are superior, but at least from my perspective this is finally efficient and nicely organised. I am so glad to have my old home screen back!
That said, if anyone does have suggestions for more #privacy respecting #launchers that'd do the same thing, let me know. I really don't need as many features as Nova offers anyway, I just can't find anything else that works. -
