Flight Past the Shark Shack

We were in Galveston, Texas a while back, and I found myself standing on a corner watching gulls swoop and glide through the sky. Naturally, I had my camera ready. I caught this laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) soaring down the street, just about to cross through the intersection. As it passed overhead, it happened to fly right by a restaurant called The Shark Shack.

Got Shrimp

Here’s a moment where a laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) swooped down and plucked a shrimp straight from the surf—mid-flight, mid-feast, mid-ceremony. And of course, a sanderling (Calidris alba) wandered into the frame, photobombing with perfect timing and coastal dignity.

Shoreline Trio

These are three birds that I saw at Holly Beach, Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico. The larger bird on the left is a ring billed gull (Larus delawarensis), on the right is a smaller laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla), and the tiny not quite in focus bird between them is a sanderling (Calidris alba).

Tidal Assembly

This is a mixed bunch of birds on the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi in the fall. The birds are a mix of laughing gulls (Leucophaeus atricilla) and black skimmers (Rynchops niger). Notice that many of the birds have their head turned backwards and their bills tucked beneath their wings. The bill is an extremity, and they tuck them beneath their wings to warm them, like we might put our fingers beneath our arm pits to warm them on a cold day.

Camouflaged by its proximity to a piece of driftwood, I inadvertently walked closer than normal to this juvenile Laughing Gull this morning. They were not the least bit spooked and quite the accommodating model.
