I do understand where a lot of Conservatives are coming from with this "glorious past" sentiment. I also had a talk the other day of why I understood it was bullshit.

I remember playing under the Sodium lights in Texas. I remember climbing trees and boulders on our 32 acre property in Colorado. I remember what it was like to be free and have no responsibilities. I deeply feel the lyrics of Stressed Out by 21 pilots

"Out of student loans and tree house homes, we all would take the latter"

I am a millenial but I'm on the old side of the divide of the internet. I have much more in common with Gen X latchkey kids because that's how I was raised. Raised being a bit of an overstatment. My sister and I raised eachother more than my parents did.

I remember those times of having relaxation and no responsibility and sometimes I wish for that but instead it's "Wake up you need to make money". I pine for that. I want the bikes under the lights and the rock scrambling and the make believe. Not the crushing reality of capitalism. So I understand what Conservatives are talking about when they talk about the "Glorius past".

But the thing is I know the world happened without me. I remember I couldn't tell if it was Isreal and Palestine or the Gulf War on the TV. My mother always told me that people just like me were putting filthy AIDs needles in theater seats because queer people were just spiteful and hateful.

I also remember coming down the stairs in the morning to lists of chores and things we needed to do. Like drink 8 cups of water or eat soup. Because my parents were not there and when they were there they through us out and hit the proverbial latch. Because my parents, like myself were working endless overtime to make dues meet.

I constantly do everything to make sure that I am taking interest in my family whenever I can because I have a big hole of abandonment trauma where parent figures should be. When I was an adult I realized how I conceive "Mother" and "Father" is irrecongnizable from people that didn't come from abusive homes.

I truly and deeply understand that conservative mindset of the good ol days. I really do. But if you are the kind of person that thinks that, I want you to think of what was going on around you. Who was working for you. How much did they need to struggle to get by. What (culture) war was going on around you that you were too young to understand.

My dad has a very vivid memory of his mother screeching in fear, anger and panic because he had almost taken a drink out of a Colored Fountain. I guarantee you that idealized past of "no on was offended" and everyone was happy and the economy was perfect is a fantasy, if you think about other people instead of just yourself.
