A tough one from #ESO: In https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2327a/ they show a current airborne view of #LaSilla and ask "How many telescopes can you spot?" - and point to a very much outdated map of this Chilean observatory for guidance. E.g. the prominent three #BlackGEM telescopes are recent additions.

This #picture is a #startrail taken from the dome of the swiss "Euler" #telescope at #LaSilla #observatory, in #Chile. The #camera was on the alt-az mount so it was tracking the stars horizontally. I tried to produced an artistic "raining star trail"... but I failed.

There are many astronomical observatories in Chile, several of them in the Norte Chico region, near La Serena. Two of them are so close that you can see one from the other. This is a view of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) telescopes (white dots on the far mountain range you can see if you enlarge the photo) from Las Campanas Observatory. The majestic view of the inner regions of our Galaxy spanning the #NightSky over #ESO #LaSilla #Observatory in #Chile. The green hue of #airglow is also seen, as is the blaze of the city lights of #LaSerena, 150 km away over the mountains to the left of the picture.

Evening turns to night over the snowy mountain tops near #ESO #LaSilla. It's a beautiful sight!

You certainly don't get #skies quite like this here in the UK! This is me under the spectacular #starry skies above the #ESO #LaSilla #Observatory in #Chile. Above and to the right you can see the Large and Small #MagellanicClouds. These are relatively small galaxies that orbit our #MilkyWay #Galaxy. Literally galaxy moons!

When I'm observing with large professional #telescopes, I always take the opportunity to capture #photography of the #night #sky. I drop my #camera somewhere in the #observatory, set the timer so that it takes #pictures automatically while I am busy hunting for #exoplanets. Before going to sleep, I collect my footage and process them while I rest.

This is an exemple #startrail I did 10 years ago from #ESO's #LaSilla observatory 🇨🇱, maybe one of my favorite

This is the #ESO #picture of this week. It shows the 1.52m #telescope at #LaSilla #observatory 🇨🇱 observing the #MilkyWay thought the #dome's opening.

This telescope is now retired after almost 30 years to study #stars, #galaxies, #comets and even #exoplanets.

This telescope is the twin of the 1.52m telescope at #HauteProvence Observatory 🇫🇷 . Still used nowadays, the french brother has a new adaptive-optic (AO) test bench, 33 years after the first AO prototype for ESO (COME-ON).

We can clearly see #airglow as well on this #photography I took from the #ESO #LaSilla #observatory, in #Chile 🇨🇱 .

This #FullSky #picture shows the #MilkyWay crossing the #sky above the #exoplanet hunter 3.6-m #telescope, currently used now by @asmasca.

The #orange light surrounding the sky, at the horizon, is not light pollution (there are some from the #Panamerica #highway), but #airglow.

First days visiting #ESO observatories. Needless to say, incredible sunsets from La Silla.

The jump in precision between the #CORAVEL (300m/s) and the #ELODIE (10m/s) spectrographs was due to several achievements.

CORAVEL was mounted directly on the back of the swiss telescopes at either the #HauteProvence or #LaSilla observatories. In such case, the instrument's #optical and #mechanical components are deformed by #temperature, #humidity and the position of the telescope. Such deformation was a clear limitation to the radial velocity precision.

Ahaha @eamonn_kerins. I actually don't have many #LaSilla #timelapse with the danish #telescope.

I just searched and find one where we do see the #Danish telescope in operation (unlike ExTrA, which was during commissioning).

I'm very privileged in my job to go to amazing #astronomical observatories. This one is the #DanishTelescope at the #ESO #LaSilla #Observatory at the edge of the #Atacama desert in #Chile. I was inside the dome observing #microlensing events during the course of this #timelapse. Look out for the glorious view of the #Galactic Centre near the end.
