No exhibit on life beyond Earth would be complete without mentioning #SETI – the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and the exhibit ends with a cornerstone display, the #LaserSETI telescope. Working with the museum design team, Eliot Gillum, along with Unistellar’s Franck Marchis and Lauren Sgro, helped develop the exhibit space that the LaserSETI instrument would occupy, as well as the descriptions and captions that present the LaserSETI story and science.

July 2024 brought a heat wave to Arizona as well as an unprecedented software outage across the nation. But for Richard Factor, it also brought excitement and the glimmer of hope that accompanies the forefront of science. Factor, a Grammy winner and ham radio expert, was offering his rooftop as the location for the next #LaserSETI observatory.

IFLScience was invited behind the scenes to the Natural History Museum, London's new exhibition, "Space: Could Life Exist Beyond Earth?", where they saw a new instrument developed by the SETI Institute. Humanity has just started using laser light to communicate with spacecraft in deep space; however, advanced civilizations might already be using those lasers, and the #LaserSETI devices aim to spot those and other technosignatures.

Sedona resident Richard Factor has spent a lifetime using ham radio to contact every country on Earth except for North Korea. He’s now hoping to connect with other planets after the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute installed two LaserSETI stations on his roof in July to scan the skies for laser pulses originating outside the solar system.

In a recent conversation, Dr. Franck Marchis, Director of Unistellar Citizen Science at the SETI Institute and manager of Laser SETI, and Dr. Lauren Sgro, Astronomer and outreach manager for Laser SETI, discussed a paper by Méndez et al. (2024) that proposes a novel explanation for the Wow! signal. The paper suggests that the signal could have been caused by a transient astrophysical phenomenon. -

Exciting news for LaserSETI! Two new LaserSETI stations will be installed this weekend in Sedona, Arizona. Although the current installations in California and Hawai’i observe almost 20% of the sky at one time, that will go up dramatically with the new observatory. You can see here how the LaserSETI team has been hard at work getting ready for the install. -

Making our next 10 instruments efficiently, as well as ensuring their reliability and ease of maintenance, is a top priority. Some of you might remember a previous iteration of a power board. That board was overpriced and unnecessarily aggressive, so we switched vendors, changed how we did the cabling to avoid joints, and reduced the scope of the board to handle the two remaining wiring challenges: the fans and FLI cameras.

On the left, you’ll see an off-the-shelf appliance dolly. Cheap and easy to obtain, but it only allows access to the wiring area in the instrument base with the panels removed and with the dolly somewhat awkwardly interfering with said access. On the right, we’ve machined custom aluminum “legs” with casters, so the bottom panels can stay on and even be opened or closed as necessary. -

Today’s the day when a lot of work streams come together in the Gantt chart: our 10 enclosures have been delivered. That means we can start building instruments, which means we can deploy them, which means more sky coverage and advancing the project! -

I’ve said for a while now that I view the search for technosignatures as in a race with astrobiology. I picture it like the children’s story of the race between the tortoise and the hare. Astrobiology is the tortoise, making regular progress but always painful to wait for the next instrument or discovery.
