A glorious end to a very trying final Friday in February - fixing fences and chasing sheep out of the wood - again.
Normal service resumed (torrential rain) today.

  13. I Did not know that the #larch #flowers so beautyfully! Aparently the red flower is a female cone, while the smaller yellowish ones are male cones.

These twigs where collected from larger branches that broke off after last weeks sudden heavy snowfalls. Those were caused by #climatecatastophy warming up the mediterranean sea say metereologists. As large quantities of wet snow fell on #trees already in leafe, the weight tore down whole trees and major parts of trees. Looking out of the train, it seemed like about every second tree at the bottom of the #rhone valley was heavily damaged. The twigs in the picture stem from a higher altitude (about 2000m AMSL).

  14. One of my favourite trees, Larch, a deciduous conifer. I know it's not native, but it has these cute new needles in the spring, and turns a fantastic bronze in autumn.

  15. Each fall I eagerly anticipate the Tamarack/Larch tree in my front yard turning gold. It is stunning with it's bright #gold needles or leaves. The #Tamarack is a deciduous conifer. It is a conifer as it has needles and seed cones but it loses the needles in the fall unlike other conifers.

  16. Burning #firewood to heat my home is part of a cycle of life that has this #winter included a cycle of healing. It’s almost spiritual for this atheist in a way.

Let me focus on this hypothetical lodgepole #pine. There’s plenty like it in the woodpile. It grew 80 feet tall to a circumference of about three feet and then, at around age 80, died of old age.

It’s not my favored species in these woods. #Ponderosa pine, then #larch, then these scraggly lodgepoles. 2/
