Learning new stuff - programming ITE EC chip over the keyboard connector with #SVOD4 without needing to desolder the chip.

One thing I can tell you is you better use a microscope to make sure you’re picking the right ribbon cable and that you align it well while plugging.

Quite a fiddly thing to deal with but eventually I made it work.

The kids had this Lenovo Ideapad miix510 for school, until the heatsink mount of the motherboard broke and even with my repair attempts it ran hot and noisy.

So it sat there for a while until I found refurbished motherboards for sale, so now it has an i7 with 8GB, a good heatsink mount and a new battery.

Might use it myself on-the-go. It still has Ubuntu on it in dual boot because that's more touchscreen friendly...

#SandboxATL #RepairCafe went very well yesterday, This time consisting of lots of laptop repairs! We fixed a bunch of random linux software issues, a bluetooth speaker, a malfunctioning laptop screen, and some headphones! We also did some data recovery, cleaned a PS4 that was left in the rain (but somehow still worked?), and I sort-of fixed the Sandbox cassette deck (it doesnt eat tapes *quite* as much as before!).

Try to search for the board (NM-D621), and you get tons of shitty (probably predator) websites which only let you download the files with an account.

Also, the "FA7604", which is blown, is not on Mouser, it seems only on Aliexpress.

It was a little fiddly but NOT HARD TO DO, and the replacement screen (~120€) was the only cost involved. Seriously, if you can operate a screwdriver and have some fine motor skills, you can do this.

We couldn't have done it without videos on YouTube though, so thank you to everyone who has ever uploaded a video of a repair! We have replaced this laptop's keyboard last winter, so this is the second repair. It works like a charm and hopefully will last many more years!

So of course I soldered a replacement nicely and it works, but MacBook still won’t detect battery data. It won’t start on the battery, but if I start it with power plugged in and then remove it - it keeps on working from the battery.

However it won’t show any battery data or charge level.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated 🙌🏻.

Just finished looking at a Windows laptop model, the Jumper EZBook X3 which came in with a badly damaged screen.

The screen is a older 13.3" FHD panel model LC133LF4L01 by "Panda" which is no longer available for purchase and was discontinued many years ago.

The laptop was good for it's price class but a bit underpowered for anything but light general usage (8 GBytes RAM and a 128 GBytes eMMC storage) and a Intel Celeron N3450 CPU.

If you are looking for a lower cost laptop then there are plenty of ex-business refurbished laptops for resale, such as the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Gen 2 or the similar Yoga models from ~£249 onwards with much better specifications and also Windows 11 compatible.

The ThinkPads and Yogas appear to also be Linux compatible if that's your preferred OS.

The data from the EZbook has been rescued for passing onto the customer 🙂

If you are going to spec our a new laptop then do check if the storage (SSD) or RAM are supplied as separate removable modules or if they are integrated into the main board 🤔

If it's the latter, then they may not be upgradeable for the lifetime of the laptop. Should you need data recovery, it will be far more difficult to recover data that isn't backed up 🫤🤷‍♂️

Finally managed to get a replacement keyboard for my older Sony VAIO laptop. I had spilt water on it many many years ago, and despite a successful return-to-function, many keys stopped working. No longer!

I LOVE this laptop as a "old-school" workhorse, given it has FireWire, eSATA, and Memory Stick Duo ports. Stable, fast enough, and 8GB of RAM+SSD!
