Drinking Pictish Gifts

When showing up at someone’s house for dinner it’s always lovely to present the host with a bottle of wine. And what better way to present it than in a fine, hand printed, natural cotton canvas bag with jute tie?

Our friend Vicki Platts-Brown took a shine to my otters and hares and has been experimenting with lino block prints.

Each bag has a different design on the front and back. The bags seem roomy enough for Champagne, though I wouldn’t swear to it as so far I’ve only tried a pinot noir.

And of course when presenting a gift, it’s just good manners to have a card to go with it…

These are all made with gorgeous, handmade paper. The multi-coloured paper is from Sustainable Paper Craft by Kelsey Pike. The brown paper is also handmade, though Vicki can’t remember where she got it (she bought it in big sheets years ago; she has plenty). Both are incredibly tactile, very soft.

Let me know what you like, and why—or why not—and perhaps what other of my beasties you’d like to see.1 These are all test pieces. Vicki and I are both enjoying playing with this stuff…

Speaking of hares, remember those Pictish Beasts in bronze by the fabulous MaudPunk? Well, I finally got myself a couple of them—the lapel pin and the pendant—and they look fine. Having said that, they are oddly difficult to photograph—they look so much better in real life than in any picture.

I forgot to get a pic of the pendant (it looks its best when worn) but here are a couple of the pin. The first was just on the kitchen table:

The second on the same table but this time with my napkin behind it for contrast and to cut glare.

And still neither of these can convey what they’re really like: they feel amazing in the hand—small and weighty—and when worn look as though they should cost about five times what they do. Delicious, well-crafted little things. These, unlike the wine bags and cards, are for sale right now from MaudPunk’s Etsy store—go take a look; there’s lots of good stuff there.

Meanwhile, I feel very lucky to have two such talented friends turning my doodles into tangible art.

Pin Collection: Organized

My Christmas present from Andrle this year was a new setup for storing my pin collection. I’ve been collecting since family road trips since I was little, long before I was aware there was a whole community around pin trading (especially for Disney ones).

Mostly they reflect places I’ve been or events I’ve experienced. Pins from national parks, museums, that sort of thing. A lot of the fun of this gift was the organizing, as well as looking at and appreciating them all again. A few of my earlier acquisitions aren’t quite as high quality as more recent ones, as pins became more of a thing, but still a cool part of the whole.

For a few years now I’ve had some of the pins up on banners on the wall of my home office, but they were out of room for newer ones and were arranged more or less just by how the spacing worked. I also found that since it was part of the wall decor I kinda stopped seeing them after a while.

We found this great idea to use photo storage bins and cork board to make a bunch of much denser pin stores. Assembly was pretty straightforward, although cutting the thicker 12″x12″ cork down was harder than I thought (and resulted in a few slightly beveled edges). I might need a new blade.

The bigger challenge was deciding how best to group pins. Each 4″x6″ board could fit 15-20 pins depending on size. Some sets (like the one from backing the Star Trek: Voyager documentary) were more obvious, while other groups from past travel were harder. (Are zoos museums? Should cities and states be together?)

Now I have all of the pins grouped and mounted, with plenty of room for future collecting. Maybe I’ll do a labeled version of this someday…

We didn’t glue them down, and buttons are just loose for now, but I have them all otherwise mounted and stored.

I think I need to come up with a good way to display one or two sets at a time as a rotation on my office shelf. After all what’s the point of collecting if you can’t appreciate the items you collect and use them to retell stories?

Unfortunately there is not really a solid "DIY" option outside of using an acrylic mold with lead-free solder; as for the pressed metal options, I am not aware of any or specifically machines that a home user could buy... not really a small thing.
