  1. A Forgotten Wave of Extinction May Have Erased Thousands of Human Languages

Photo: (Yale University/Wikimedia) Around 7,500 spoken and signed languages are used worldwide today. Yet this extraordinary diversity may represent only a fraction of the linguistic richness humanity once possessed. A new modeling study published in Science suggests language diversity reached a forgotten golden age between 1,000 and 3,000 years ago, when tens of thousands of languages may have coexisted. What followed was a dramatic decline that appears to have begun long before European […]

  6. 🤖 Ah, #Meta has cracked the code to translate 1,600 languages... until you realize they’ve left out about 5,400 others. 🌍🔍 Apparently, ‘No Language Left Behind’ only applies if those languages were popular in the last century. 🧐 #TechInnovationOrSomething

  9. spending time on Mastodon

I enjoy the exposure to different technical / cultural / scientific vocabularies on here. As someone on the spectrum, I read much of that technical lingo as expression of passion.

    I find such passion heartening.

I love learning new things, about the world and about humans. Though mostly about the world lol. Lichens, cicadas, tardigrades, megafauna, quasars....

  10. Did you know there’s no such thing as a universal sign language? 🌍 Sign languages belong to families, just like spoken ones! For example, BSL is related to Australian and NZ Sign Language but completely different from American Sign Language (ASL). Want to know more? Islands are engines of linguistic diversity, study shows

Islands drive language change and generate #languageDiversity in similar ways to how they drive species diversity, according to new research from The Australian National University (ANU) that analysed #languages from over 13,000 inhabited #islands.

  14. I cannot find a way to reliably set the default language of Office 365 to British English. No matter how deep I go into even the Normal templates, there will always be moments when it will revert to US English (any software update will mess it up for sure). Outlook is especially pesky, but overall, Microsoft really misses the mark for being a truly global brand, respectful of the vast majority of its users that are non-US.
