Landsbergis: Wir Europäer haben die Schwere der Situation nie akzeptiert. Ich habe so oft bei Gipfeln und Treffen gesagt: Bitte versteht doch, was in der #Ukraine geschieht! Es wird Europas Zukunft bestimmen! Aber das war vielen zu dramatisch.

Landsbergis: Die Amerikaner werden den Ukrainern einen Deal mit den Russen vorschlagen. Sollten die Ukrainer ablehnen, weil das Angebot für sie untragbar ist, dann werden die Amerikaner sagen: Ihr seid ein souveränes Land, es ist eure Entscheidung. Aber wir können euch dann nicht mehr helfen. Danach werden die Ukrainer sich an die Europäer wenden mit der Bitte um Unterstützung. Sie brauchen Milliarden, Munition, die bei dieser Kampfintensität nur noch für einige Monate ausreicht. Europa hat das alles nicht. Stattdessen verstricken wir uns in endlose Diskussionen.
ZEIT: Sie waren als Außenminister bei vielen Gipfeln und Verhandlungen dabei. Warum haben so viele die Brisanz der Lage nicht erkannt?
Landsbergis: Ein Teil Europas lebt in einer anderen Wirklichkeit. Für ihn ist das ein Regionalkonflikt, weit weg von ihnen. Und dann gibt es Länder wie #Litauen und #Polen, für die der Krieg vor der Tür stattfindet und die eine sofortige Reaktion verlangen. Es ist existenziell für sie. Deshalb überrascht es mich, dass beim Gipfel in #Paris die Polen gegen Truppen in der #Ukraine waren. Der Brite Keir #Starmer erklärte, dass #Großbritannien bereit sei, Truppen zu schicke. Er ging allein voran und sagte das, was alle Europäer sagen müssten.
ZEIT: Auch für Deutschland ist eine Truppenentsendung eine rote Linie.
Landsbergis: Es ist aber auch eine rote Linie für Russland.
ZEIT: Haben die Europäer jetzt verstanden, in was für einer historischen Situation sie sich befinden?
Landsbergis: Alle, mit denen ich auf der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz sprach, sagen, dass Europa nun aufwachen müsse. Sie verstehen, was auf dem Spiel steht. Aber wenn man dann darüber spricht, die Ukraine so schnell wie möglich in die EU aufzunehmen, um das Land wirtschaftlich, finanziell und politisch zu stabilisieren, dann heißt es: Unsere Bauern machen das nicht mit. Was soll ich darauf erwidern? Es ist ein Argument aus einer anderen Wirklichkeit.」
