How to Live with a Fictional Universe in Your Head

I missed the first two messages from my father when my mother fell last month and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. My ringer was off, as it often is, because I didn’t want anything to disrupt my flow state while I was writing.
I wrote a lot of words that day, but I wasn’t present in my real life.
It’s a pattern I’m not proud of.
Living with a novel in progress means carrying around a hidden universe that can simultaneously feel like a gift and a burden. It’s my job to hold and shape this imagined world long enough to make it real for readers, without losing myself in the process.

The Book of #Lamentations ends with the expression of confidence in YHWH and hope for the future.  The author hoped YHWH would bring His people back and renew them. 

Yet he maintained some concern whether YHWH has indeed completely rejected His people. 

The concern was understandable, but YHWH would maintain His covenant loyalty for His people, and accomplish the restoration He promised through Jesus the Christ.

#Lamentations vividly and viscerally describes the destruction of Jerusalem, the demise of so many of its people, and the agony of the exile. 

Its author gives voice to all the people regarding all they have suffered.

This Post is Not About Grief

It’s really not. This post is about driving south on I-5, from Bellingham, WA, toward my home in Seattle. It’s raining, and I’m crying. 
But I’m not crying because my dad died in December, December 16th to be exact, after a 26-month dogfight with a particularly nasty cancer. 
I’m crying because for five nights, I have been staying in an itty-bitty Airbnb. By myself. Writing. And now I must go home.
