  1. I had me a little play with the mosaic function for my Astronomy Group's target of the month earlier, the Lagoon Nebula, with a bonus Trifid Nebula thrown in there as well. Only about an hour's exposure, with these bright objects.

  3. Cold and crisp, and long winter solstice time nights have made for great observation times here in #PerthWesternAustralia . So now that it's come over all cloudy and rainy it's time to do some processing.

I have been catching a couple of snippets of things at the end of a longer project, and this is one of them. The Lagoon Nebula says hi!

    Just 55 minutes.

  5. Last night I tried something a little different.

    I got my #Dwarf2 out, and ran a couple of sessions on the #LagoonNebula ( #M8 ).

The first was in the near-infrared, using a SVBony IR pass filter.

The second, slightly shorter one, was in unfiltered RGB.

Then I shifted the IR image to a green tone, and layered the two images on top of each other.

I am rather pleased with the results. I did not use the #Dwarf3 for this, as I only have a 1.25" IR filter.

  9. Lagoon Nebula

At only 4,320 light-years away, the Lagoon Nebula features an open cluster of young stars age 4 - 6 million years.

Captured with my Seestar S30 at John Glenn Astronomy Park tonight.

  11. While appearing pink in long-exposure photographs, it typically appears gray when viewed through binoculars or telescopes due to the human eye's limited color sensitivity in low-light conditions.

  13. Trying to get back to astrophotography after a long hiatus. As a starter, Lagoon Nebula (M8) photons for an hour.

80mm refractor, imx585 camera, no filter, PMC-Eight mount, 30mm guidescope, 2 mins sub, open-source software (NINA, PHD2, ASCOM, Carte du Ciel, DeepSkyStacker, Siril, Cosmic Clarity, GraXpert, Darktable), Bortle 5 sky.

  15. Last night we had a lovely clear sky, so I set up a mosaic with the Dwarf3 around the Triffid and Lagoon nebulae.

I applied my usual post processing steps, and I got almost as good a result as I got up in Beacon with the DwarfII. But only almost, and with twice as long an exposure.

Let's just look at that for a moment, because not all is as it seems.

The D3 has a 38mm aperture, and the D2 25mm. This means that the D3 has twice the light gathering capability of the D2, and has a more sensitive detector. So this image has four times the light gathered as the image in Beacon, but it is also a mosaic covering almost four times the area, so we come back down to the same amount of light per pixel as the D2 got in a true dark sky.

What this means is that if I had taken this shot last week in Beacon, it would have been truely spectacular!

2 hours 8 minutes total exposure, gain 80, Ha/OIII filter.

  17. 📸 Rubin’s First Look: A Sagittarius Skyscape
This wide-field view from the new Vera C. Rubin Observatory spans over 4 degrees in Sagittarius. It captures the Lagoon Nebula (M8) and Trifid Nebula (M20), two iconic regions of star formation in the Milky Way.

  18. After last night's #drone show of #Kooranup, I set up my #DwarfII down on #Manjaree (#BathersBeach) in #Walyalup (#Fremantle).

Despite bright lights everywhere, and a lot of haze from the bushfires around #Perth , I managed to get a very nice shot of the #LagoonNebula (#M8). 100 frames @gain 80 and 15s exposure, with an OIII/Ha filter. Post processed in #snapseed.
