  1. #LichenSubscribe: I was looking at a loose clump of lichen on one of my reliable mite boulders when I noticed it was unusually…mobile. A lichen-carrying lacewing, _Leucochrysa pavida_!

Some fascinating information and tips on distinguishing this species from similar North American debris-carrying lacewings here: bugguide.net/node/view/265445

  2. A golden-eyed lacewing. Many years ago, these were the first insects that really caught my attention. They seem so perfect and exotic that it's hard to believe they're real.

  3. @acm_redfox "Researchers observed that larval lacewings that do feed on [oleander aphids] may not mature normally, that ladybug larvae may have deformed wings as adults, and that afflicted spiders spin aberrant webs." uwm.edu/field-station/bug-of-t

It seems that some ladybugs can be harmed by oleander aphids, although perhaps others can tolerate their poisons.

Which bugs, ladybugs or otherwise, can eat these aphids without taking damage? It's not clear to me.

#Flower strips could save #apple farmers pest control costs
Flower strips create a home for a team of helpful #insects – like #ladybirds, #hoverflies, and #lacewings – that eat harmful pests such as aphids. This natural team of pest controllers helps keep apple trees healthy with less need for chemical sprays.

  5. This lacewing (likely Micromus posticus) is puzzled by what it sees through the window. How strange it is to live in a house, with so much stuff. What do you do with all of those things in there?

Are there any aphids for my children to eat?

  7. In a dense Sequoia forest where the darkness is broken by only a single solarbeam, a #Caihong curiously inspects a #Kalligrammatid, seeing a face not unlike its own staring back from the strange insect's transparent wings.

Although kalligrammatids superficially look like butterflies, these #Jurassic insects are in fact #Lacewings! This means their wings, which in Kalligramma brachyrhyncha's case seem to have mimicked a maniraptoran face, were transparent!

  8. Aphid predators seen lately:

    - Enoplognatha cobweb spider on goldenrod
    - Ladybug on goldenrod
    - Lacewing larva on chicory
    - Whirligig mite on…I don't know what this plant is

  10. This sent me down a whole rabbit hole of #lacewings vs #antlions vs #mayflies...
    Not a scientist (clearly)
Nice to know that mayflies are in huge clouds only over very clean, highly oxygenated water because their lifecycle means they spend much of it in the water.

  11. The Green #Lacewings are out in New Orleans. Multiple species, all looking fabulous with their lacey green wings, some floating like tiny green angels through the air and others resting on surfaces waiting to be admired.
