Hospital Houston Methodist propone cirugía personalizada contra cáncer cervicouterino

Una nueva revisión liderada por el Hospital Houston Methodist recomienda cambiar de un enfoque quirúrgico uniforme a uno más adaptado al riesgo y centrado en las características específicas de cada paciente para tratar el cáncer cervicouterino en etapas tempranas.
 
El estudio, publicado recientemente en la revista Cancers, ofrece hasta ahora el panorama más claro sobre cómo ha evolucionado el manejo quirúrgico de este cáncer ginecológico común desde que el ensayo clave Laparoscopic Approach to Cervical Cancer (LACC, por sus siglas en inglés) transformó la práctica a nivel mundial.
 
“Después del estudio LACC, surgieron temores y confusión comprensibles sobre cómo operar de forma segura”, señala Pedro Ramírez, jefe del Departamento de Obstetricia y Ginecología del Hospital Houston Methodist e investigador principal tanto de la revisión en Cancers como del ensayo LACC.

“Lo que hemos aprendido desde entonces es que el cáncer cervicouterino no es una sola enfermedad —y el riesgo quirúrgico debe equilibrarse con las características de la paciente, el tamaño del tumor y la histología, en lugar de aplicar una misma regla para todos los casos”. –sn–
