  1. "More than 200 staffers at the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit behind the encyclopedia Wikipedia, have voted 158-14 to join the Communications Workers of America labor union. The US National Labor Relations Board counted ballots on Thursday.

Three Wikimedia employees tell WIRED they will now have a mechanism to challenge management as the organization faces growing competition from AI chatbots and a drop in volunteer editors. The 25-year-old, San Francisco-based foundation employs nearly 700 people across 39 countries, most of them working remotely. The contingent joining the union includes employees in functions such as software engineering, finance, and communications.

Lauren de Lench, who has been a lead technical program manager at the Wikimedia Foundation since 2021, says she voted to unionize because she had seen too many colleagues decline to speak up during internal meetings out of fear of retaliation for raising issues or proposing far-out ideas."

Two-thirds of people in California’s 22nd Congressional district rely on Medicaid. But the majority of the district also voted to elect President Trump in 2024.

  5. 'A Strong Working-Class Agenda With Moral Clarity': UAW Endorses Abdul El-Sayed
In what could be his most important endorsement in the tight Senate primary, #Michigan’s largest and most influential union said El-Sayed was “someone we can trust to have our backs.”

“Having never taken a dime from corporate #PACs, Dr. #AbdulElSayed is someone we can trust to have our backs,” the #union continued. “From #MedicareForAll to banning stock buybacks, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is ready, eager, and well-equipped to move our core issues in the USSenate.”

Dan Merica, a reporter at The Washington Post, noted that losing the #UAW endorsement to El-Sayed was a particularly big blow to Stevens, “who is running as a technocrat, often referring to herself as a ‘manufacturing geek’ because of her work as one of President Barack Obama’s top officials on the 2009 auto rescue.”

  6. Joe Hill moved to America from Sweden at age 23 in 1902. He worked as a traveling day laborer, taught himself English, and preceded to write PROTEST SONGS SO SCATHING AND EFFECTIVE that copper magnates had him tried on false charges and killed only 4 years into his songwriting career. His final words were "Don't mourn. Organize" And people did.

We gotta do better here, folks. And not with no AI generation. Pen to paper. Let's go!

  8. Colorado #Slaughterhouse Workers Ratify New Contract

On April 12, 2026, members of United Food and Commercial #Workers (#UFCW) Local 7 ratified a new agreement with the JBS Swift beef processing plant in Greeley, #Colorado. A #union press release announcing the vote — with 93% in favor — said the contract contained "all gains, countless improvements, and not a single concession."

"This ... is a testament to the incredible resolve of our members," said Local 7 president Kim Cordova. "These workers stood together on the picket line for three weeks, through extreme weather, because they knew their worth and refused to be disrespected."

“The company walked away,” Cordova told the crowd of more than 800 #workers from the day shift picket lines. “They believed that you would not walk out on strike.”

But of the 3,800 workers in the plant represented by the #union, 94% did walk on March 16, marking the first major packinghouse strike in 40 years.[1]

The workers’ action had an impact, according to the union. About 60% of the cattle earmarked for JBS went to competitors as the company tried to operate with the remaining hourly workforce and supervisors.

“The problem is the way we are being treated,” Hector Vargas told World-Outlook before the April 3 union meeting at the parking lot. “To keep up with work means taking a beating. And you cannot go to the bathroom. They make you wait a long time — if they let you go.”

Yesterday, we escalated our #UnfairLaborPractice #strike by heading straight to York, Pennsylvania, home to #Starbucks’ biggest East Coast distribution center with a message: If Starbucks won’t meet us at the table, we’ll meet them at their supply chain. We'll keep escalating, or we'll bring the picket line to them.

Fifteen thousand workers went on strike at a major gas field in #Iran last week, demanding improved wages and working conditions at the economically critical South Pars field. Earlier this month, the Association of Gas Industry #Workers#Unions of Bushehr Province—the largest #labor organization representing the workers of Iran’s #gas refineries at South Pars—announced a weekly work stoppage over longstanding grievances at the site.

A letter announcing the strike laid out several key demands that the workers had put to Iranian authorities related to inequitable pay, difficult working conditions, and inadequate leave time for workers at the site.
