  5. The US moved Labor Day to September in 1894 specifically to avoid association with May Day and the international labor movement. Most of the world didn't follow. Still celebrates workers on May 1. The calendar is doing political work and almost nobody notices. #LaborDay #history

A reminder - International Workers' Day (AKA Labor Day) was on May 1st. It was designated as to commemorate a general strike of workers in the United States in 1886, which ended with the Haymarket riots / affair.

In the United States, we celebrate Labor Day in September. This is intentional.

There was a Labor Day celebrated in the US and Canada in September in the late 1800s. Then, the Second International (an international meeting of socialists, labor leaders, etc) in 1889 proposed International Workers Day as May 1st.

In the US, labor leaders did support switching over to the May 1st date. However, the fact that socialists were associated with the holiday was too much for politicians in the US. Including aggressive capitalist and groomer (look it up, he's a creep) President Grover Cleveland, who signed into law the September date.

We don't have a united labor holiday in the US that was based on an event associated with the labor movement in the US because of a Red Scare in the late 1800s.

    Happy Labor Day weekend.

  16. Grab the free discussion guide for the film as well, which explores the real-life legacy of Lilly Ledbetter. It is designed to inspire conversations around wage equity as essential to personal, economic, and social empowerment. It highlights the idea that this isn’t just about Lilly Ledbetter’s story — it’s about the right of everyone, across all backgrounds, to fair compensation. 3/n
