At workbench with #Elecraft #KX3, did a careful teardown and resolder of power socket. A repair I've done before.

Eventually, PowerPole connectors for power?

I drove out to a bayside park, set up at a picnic table, tossed a wire into a tree, and had a quick listen.

Works.

20m through 10m had stations. Nobody heard me answering calls, but, hey, 10w and bad antenna.

Curious turkeys watched me and chortled at me. Numerous ground squirrels zigzagged about the dusty lawn.

A 10 yr old KX3 has come up in used market in VU land for 1k USD. Tempted but going to pass as I have my eyes on a KH-1 in near future.
Still, I think its priced higher given its age. What do you all think. #elekraft #kx3

I think it looks like a Turret from the game Portal, hence its name.

The rubber grommets are for my #Elecraft #KX3 radio. The radio is externally powered by a barrel jack. The jack has come loose from the circuit board again, from twisting and tugging coming from the power cable.

I would like to install a cable with strain-relief, running through a rubber grommet in the KX3's side panel, coming out to a set of Anderson Powerpole connectors.

Most of my other stuff has those connectors on them already. Solar panel, SLA battery, charge controller.

This is my newest toy in my shack: An awesome KX3. I couldn’t resist buying it from a fellow ham. Well it’s very expensive but especially its receiver is hot!

Has anyone else been an idiot and snapped the BNC connector on their AX1 AXB1 bipod?

Thanks to ‘Angelo’ on printables (https://www.printables.com/model/385370-elecraft-ax1-antenna-clip) I printed a replacement which works very nicely.

I’ve got 8 spare (don’t ask!) , if anyone wants one DM (or email) me for my address, send me a SAE and I’ll drop one in the post.

I guess this is likely only work it for UK people but if you’re happy to pay international postage then I’m game 😀

One idea I had earlier today, was to make and glue a plastic disk to the metal radio case, right over the power connector opening.

The disk would then have an opening that exactly fits and thus supports the plastic part of the plug, transferring forces to the case, in order to protect the jack on the circuit board inside.

One problem is that the jack and the hole in the chassis are not coaxial. It's a simple design.

Elecraft KX3 back together!

Just a couple minutes for the power jack resoldering.

More time was spent just trying to keep up with tiny screws and washers, find where the tiny hex wrench set had disappeared to.

I hooked up the homemade mag loop antenna, bypassed the radio's tuner, and checked that I could hear WWV on 10 MHz.

There it is!

Although the bands are kinda awful today.

Now that I have a clean well-lit workbench again, I can get to work repairing my Elecraft KX3.

The power jack came unsoldered from the circuit board. I can't charge the NiMH, so I am stuck with alkaline AA batteries until it's resoldered.

When my hands are steadier, maybe this afternoon, I will put a sharper tip on the soldering iron and tack the jack back down.

The #Begali #Adventure Dual #MorseKey arrived today and I just had to put everything aside and test it. I also bought the magnetic base and the #kx3 mounting bracket both which proved to be a fantastically inspired choice.

The craftsmanship is amazing and the feel is sublime. It's safe to say I don't think I'll ever part with it. It represents everything I ever wanted in a portable/fixed key.

The service was perfect. TU Pietro and Bruna! Proud to have become one of the elite 🙂
