Strange As Angels, Strange As Angels, 2021 on Kwaidan
Billed as “Strange as Angels” the hype sticker calls this “Marc Collin (Nouvelle Vague) presents Chrystabell Sings The Cure.”
Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux were the masterminds behind Nouvelle Vague, which released bossa nova covers of new wave songs, playing off multiple meanings of Nouvelle Vague. (Nouvelle Vague means “new wave” in French, and Bossa Nova means “new wave” in Portugese).
Chrystabell has put out a half-dozen records herself as a singer, including work with David Lynch – here delivers Cure covers in the style of Nouvelle Vague.

I often saw this book in stores and ignored it because I wrongly assumed that it was just another rehash of Kwaidan. It is actually a very good collection of Hearn's ghostly tales culled from his various books.

Having just finished Julian Sedgwick and Chie Kusuwada's rather wonderful 100 Tales From the Tokyo Ghost Cafe (just out from Guppy Books), I have selected some appropriate viewing for this evening: 1964 Japanese classic, Kwaidan, which shares a number of the same fokloric influences.

In "Hoichi the Earless" from the movie Kwaidan, a Buddhist priest turns Hoichi's body into a talisman by writing various characters on his skin. Most of the characters are Japanese kanji. The character in red is not. It is from the Japanese bonji script, an esoteric form of Japanese writing used to invoke medieval sanskrit. This character means avalokiteshvara or kannon, the main Buddha figure of the Heart Sutra.

The result of an all-stretch-goals-reached Kickstarter, HUNGRY GHOSTS revisits the work of Lafcadio Hearn, a Victorian-era writer who, in his book KWAIDAN: STORIES AND STUDIES OF STRANGE THINGS (the most famous of his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories), told a story of Taketsura, a samurai who renounced his old life and became a wandering priest.
