En décembre 1928, Kurt Weill répond à une commande de la Radio de Francfort afin de commémorer le dixième anniversaire de la Première Guerre mondiale. Contrairement à ce que son titre laisse penser, son Berliner Requiem (1928) sur des poèmes si forts sur la guerre de Bertolt Brecht, est une cantate totalement profane. Il ressort de l’ensemble une couleur sonore particulière au service de l’engagement artistique des deux artistes, en hommage à Rosa Luxemburg, figure centrale et pacifiste assassinée le 15 janvier 1919.
Cette œuvre est mise en regard avec les Symphonies d’instruments à vent de Stravinsky, mais aussi avec Friede auf Erden de Schoenberg, et la mystérieuse et magique cantate Ode à un rossignol (1985) de Valentin Silvestrov, patriarche de la musique ukrainienne. Cette musique de la suggestion dessine avec une infinie délicatesse, au moyen de sonorités fragiles et éphémères, ce mélange de nature, de paysages et de réflexion sur le destin esquissé par le poète anglais John Keats dont les premiers vers donnent toute la mesure de l’oeuvre : « Dans le noir, j’écoute ; oui, plus d’une fois j’ai été presque amoureux de la mort ».

Un rendez-vous à ne pas manquer qui inaugure une manifestation annuelle en hommage aux artistes et compositeurs contraints à l’exil.
