The reason why I initially wanted to share all this art and info around the Kupała Night event is due to far-right, racist, queerphobic neo-nazi scum appropriating paganism and folk traditions, especially the Nordic and Slavic ones.
It's absolutely deplorable that these vile people have the gall to claim these traditions and symbols as their own. They are continuing the work of the Christian institutions that committed the cultural genocide of Pagans in the first place.
They should not be allowed to continue to spread their lies and hatred.
Paganism must be as queer and racially diverse as possible.

Marzanna (or Morana/Morena) is the Slavic goddess of winter (and also of the cycle of death and rebirth) - she is the direct opposition of Yarilo. The most important tradition regarding her is one that survived to this day and is still practiced in some places in West Slavic countries, which is the drowning of a doll representing her in a river, sometimes also setting it ablaze beforehand. This is usually done in early Spring, which is supposed to end Winter and start the cycle of life, ensuring good harvest this year.
I'm very happy to say that this tradition survived Christian purges in my hometown as well, and as a small child I participated in it twice :)
