I have been consumed with binding artist books and writing the monograph that goes with them, but I expect to finish writing tomorrow! Now that I'm so close to printing, I'm opening pre-orders for the monograph: It's a chance to catch it at the early bird price but the window closes when the book goes to press. Surat Al-Fatihah in Kufic script in the style of the 3rd–4th century AH Qur’ans, and the dotting system of Abu Al-Aswad Al-Du’ali.
This is a #kufic #typeface I’m working on, it is both a #ColorFont (for the dotting system and end of ayah marks) and a #VariableFont (for the glyph expansion and spacing). Should be released soon.

A blast from the past with this piece I finished just over 7 years ago. Aflāk/Heavenly Spheres was the most labour-intensive wall piece I ever made. It's a calligraphic interpretation of the medieval geocentric cosmos, from the 4 elements ranging to the unknowable divine Throne, using materials that were associated with each sphere. A reminder perhaps that there are vaster things to contemplate than human pettiness.

I'm a Beirut-born, London-based visual #artist specialised in the #Kufic scripts of #Arabic #calligraphy, though my practice also includes artist books and "treasure box" assemblages. I got notorious on twitter for recreating art technology from the #medieval Middle East; historical and natural art materials are my thing, I authored 2 handbooks on those topics and am still translating. I like nothing more than to vanish in my studio.
