"Kubernetes is overkill for a Home Lab", exhibit 512 (made up number): KubeVirt tagged my nodes with 200+ tags, and that caused a metrics overload, so I had to increase the pod requests in the collectors, which increased my power usage.

Then a few days later I started getting alerts of expired certs, and realized that KubeVirt has been creating thousands of one-off certificates, but not reusing them. Increasing the certificate duration not only stopped the alerts, but also *reduced the power usage*.

All this trouble and I don't even have a single VM running yet. I hope this is all worth the trouble.

Проще говоря, что лучше, интереснее и эффективнее: прикрутить к Kubernetes дополнительную фичу, например, KubeVirt, чтобы можно было с помощью оркестратора Kubernetes управлять не только контейнерами, но и виртуальными машинами, или же взять классическую среду виртуализации, управляющую виртуальными машинами, и добавить в нее Kubernetes для управления контейнеризированными приложениями. And now I have KubeVirt installed in my Talos cluster, with a test VM provisioned. Need to finish up some tweaks, then provision a real VM for real use. That's probably going to become a blog post (at some point). 😄

Edit: I realized I need to extend one extra VLAN into my cluster for one of the VMs. Oh boy, that's gonna be a hoot!

Мы во «Фланте» так и сделали: совместили Kubernetes с KubeVirt, там-сям допилили и получили решение, которое позволяет запускать виртуальные машины рядом с контейнерами и управляется как обычный кластер Kubernetes. Why is an AI involved in #kubevirt in the first place?
Was this a top-down ("We need to make more use of AI") decision, as unfortunately many organizations currently seem to do (including my employer 🤷)?

As said, #redhat is well positioned in that space. For those admins looking into #openshift #virtualization , during the migration process, you may want to use NetObserv to monitor closely your workloads network.

As an update, I could not reproduce it on Fedora 40, but I could on #OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and #Ubuntu 25.04.

However, it seems that it's reproducible in KubeVirt 1.2.2 but Fedora 42 does not have this issue with KubeVirt v1.3.1. For reference, Harvester 1.4.1 with Kubevirt 1.2.2 came out in January of this year and Harvester 1.4.2 with 1.3.1 came out in March of this year.

Yesterday one question was about the difference between #KubeVirt and #OpenVZ:

I only had a glance at the project page, but from what I understand OpenVZ only helps you to run virtual machines, where KubeVirt integrates VMs into the Kubernetes cluster, providing VMs access to the Kubernetes infrastructure, like storage, networking etc.

Correct me if I am wrong.

So, final update on #IntelArc A380 in #Kubevirt/#Kubernetes.

To put it lightly, the whole thing was a bust. Likely at least partially due to my motherboard (whatever comes with a Dell R730) not supporting resizable bar. To add to that, while Linux will try its best to resize the PCIe BAR even if the BIOS feature isn't enabled, it seems the architecture of the Intel Arc cards blocks this (something to do with the card having a built-in PCIe switch that has its own resizable bar which blocks the actual GPU's bar from being resized... or something?

Everything I've seen online seems to be point to resizable bar being almost a hard requirement for the Arc cards to do any good. So it's perhaps due to not being able to do that that the performance of the card has been absolutely terrible.

#DavinciResolve Studio would barely even run in a Linux VM (which may be as much to do with the vendor than the GPU itself). On Windows the performance was average at best, and the GPU wasn't able to handle rendering to any of the intermediate codecs (like DNxHR or Cineform) without Davinci crashing due to running out of VRAM.

I have parts coming somewhat soon to build a nice tidy 1U server based around the #TopTon #7840HS board, which looks exciting. I'm tempted to pop the GPU in there, but at the same time I'm pretty sure the #780M iGPU actually has better performance than the A380, so I'm probably just going to utilise the iGPU for that.

So might be sending the A380 onto its next (and hopefully Resizable Bar capable) home shortly.
