People crapping all over #Mozilla for having an X account now, yet I see #fedipeeps with X account links on their bios, #FOSS projects with X links on their homepages...

I despise X and Musk, but maybe be a little more consistent.

And I have publicly rebuked FOSS projects on #fedi for having X account links on their homepages, asking them just what Musk would have to do to get them to delete it.

If you're gonna go scorched earth, be consistent with it, otherwise it's just sparkling douchebaggery.

Like, if the Linux distro you use has an X or Meta account (and many of them do), but you haven't said anything about that... BRUH.

#PSA for people sharing their favorite songs:

In order to prevent vendor lock-in, don't share links to your favorite song from your music app of choice (which then becomes and advertisement for that app).

Just send your friend the name something like,

"Hey ${friend}, I think you would like
${band} - ${album} - ${song}!"

Your friend can find it. I promise. Otherwise... maybe help them learn how to use their phone?

Dear American Airlines,

When checking in for my flight, I have already acknowledged as part of my ticket-purchasing that I won't be bringing hazardous materials. I do not want to change my seat. I do not want to check additional bags. I do not want to upgrade to priority boarding.

for any #NASA folks still monitoring the #NASAsocial hashtag, please please PLEASE:

– make it SOP to put up a super simple straightforward one-page mission timeline that has every significant mission event with a built-in TZ converter so folks playing along at home can set their local time zone & get accurate updated timings 🙏

– make it as low-tech as you can – mostly text, minimal “fancy” crap (JS, WebGL, user-tracking frameworks 🤮, etc.)

– link to it prominently at / near the top of the mission homepage, maybe with a handy “Next up: $MissionEventName” label as well

– publish an iCal feed that folks can either subscribe to or download^

– update the timings as they slip or advance as best you can (and have a single source of truth that’s used to update both the mission timings page & the iCal feed, obvs.)

– yes, I’m def open to a fully-remote position on your #SciComms team so long as I can mostly work UTC+10ish-friendly hours 😜

When you publish iso images and hashes, please don't just name your hash like this:

sha256sums.txt

Instead do this:

groovy-vibe-linux-1.1-amd64.iso
groovy-vibe-linux-1.1-aarch64.iso
groovy-vibe-linux-1.1-riscv.iso
groovy-vibe-linux-sha256sums.txt

That way, when we download the sums, we know which distro they go to!!

Computer Repair Cafe - a regular event where you can bring your working(!) PC or laptop and have someone capable replacing Windows with Linux on said machine. If you are not yet sure, you can just visit and "play" with some Linux machines or Live distros to see if it's good enough for you (it is, I know :). Just an idea :)

I hope you know that what you are doing with such comments is to drive "normal" people out there from making ANY decision to give it a try. Because what they read is that Signal isn't good but that the alternatives promoted are also weird. Hence they stick with what they have.
