Kronos Quartet — Tiny Deck Concert

If you thought string quartets only play stuffy and irrelevant music, check out the NPR's latest Tiny Desk Concert, featuring the renown Kronos Quartet. Their version of 'Ohio' by Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young was a revelation and really shone new light on this song. You could sense the outrage of the original in their playing. Marvellous. And their playing of 'Strange Fruit' sung so brilliantly by Billie Holiday, was very affecting and very moving. I thought those two pieces were quite stunning in particular. Well worth a listen.

“We rarely invite the same band back to the Tiny Desk. But the beloved #KronosQuartet, which first played our offices 12 years ago, isn't the same band. Three of the four members are brand new: Cellist Paul Wianko succeeded Suny Yang; violinist Gabriela Diaz and violist Ayane Kozasa replaced retiring original members John Sherba and Hank Dutt. The newly rejuvenated quartet, still under the durable leadership of violinist and founder David Harrington, appears to be having more fun than ever. And it shows in these vigorous performances of pieces that are whimsical and socially conscious.”

Musical Interlude: OK, to add something bizarre and macabre to Valentine's Day....This started as a work by Edward Gorey that he meant to illustrate, but never got around. He sent a bunch of his writings to the group The Tiger Lillies, of which he was fond, and allowed them to set them to music. (The Gorey estate, I understand, is none too happy about this....) And this became a show, and later album, "The Gorey End."
The Tiger Lillies aren't for everyone, and while I like them, I don't expose them to all and sundry because they can be a bit off-putting. This is one of the more accessible albums, and my personal favorite track.

"I found a used copy of Michael Gordon‘s "Weather" in a bargain bin some time near the end of the 90s, and it stuck with me.
Gordon is co-founder of the #BangOnACan musical collective and attendant festival, and his work is often pretty interesting for it’s weird mix of accessible orchestral motifs, drenched in minimalism (think #SteveReich) and adventurous stretching (think #KronosQuartet) but it’s really his own thing."
